Typically I dismiss melodramatic, reductive explanations of opposition as cartoonishly evil but the obstructionists & critics at this point are just knowingly defending reckless driving. You don't slow walk this because it's an equitable-yet-profitable policy addressing a public health crisis.

Context: in 2014, LA Council member Gil Cedillo cancelled a planned bike lane on this dangerous section of road. This is the 5th cyclist fatality there since 2014. The victim was run over from behind by a driver, the most common type of car-bike collision. Protected bike lanes largely prevent this

This is in the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council district where I represent the adjacent neighborhood of Mt. Washington. North Figueroa is a dangerous road and should be reconfigured to prioritize people’s safety over parking convenience. We have the tools and the plans to fix this today. Enough.

That's actually a relatively good sign. It means the victim probably bounced off the windshield and onto the hood, rather than falling in front of the vehicle and getting run over. So very bad, but could be worse.

Just saw Citizen video of the aftermath of a motorist vs. bicycle crash at Sunset and Detroit a little before 4 pm. Police blocked off the entire street on Detroit, which usually indicates a very serious crash.
