I'm a big fan of Philly Bike Action's approach to street safety advocacy. They use kindness & fun as a tool, hosting 'parties' with music or giving out free soft pretzels. At the same time they're unafraid to push hard for timely actionable change. billypenn.com/2026/04/14/p...

Despite the obvious dangers, Philadelphia leadership and PennDOT, the agency that controls Lancaster Ave, have yet to make any real improvements to prioritize safety.

Philly Bike Action! @bikeaction.org · 22/12/2025
Lancaster Ave has an inherently dangerous design for an urban setting: wide lanes with an unprotected bike lane often being used as a shoulder. This type of design promotes speeding and makes the corridor unsafe for everybody.

On Dec 20, June Rodriguez was killed in a hit-and-run at the intersection of Lancaster Avenue and 56th Street in West Philly. June was a beloved friend and DJ in Philadelphia. If you have any information please call the police.

Can PPD & @mayorparker.bsky.social ask officers to keep the new City Hall bike lane clear? Penn Square is not a place where you want people on bikes to have to go out into mixed traffic!

● SEPTA's Trolley Modernization Project has not started work on the upgraded stops for Baltimore Ave (construction planned 2027-2030). The project's future could be threatened by severe transit funding cuts.

However, slated safety projects are yet to commence: ● City Council passed legislation authorizing the placement of a red light camera at this intersection in 2022. Installation has been delayed by lack of funding.

Between 2019 and 2023, U.S. Route 13 (which includes Baltimore Ave) saw 123 fatal and serious injury crashes and 258 total crashes involving pedestrians.

A safer solution for Baltimore Ave that could have prevented this tragedy is proposed in the Trolley Modernization Project, which protects the bike lane with floating medians at trolley stops.

Paint-only bike lanes are unsafe, particularly on high-traffic roads, in door zones, and when they signal to drivers that they can enter the lane.
120
Philly Bike Action! @bikeaction.org · 09/05/2025
This bike lane lane marking is dashed, inviting drivers to merge into the bike lane when turning. Baltimore Ave is a state road and this dangerous "conflict" bike lane was designed without protection by PennDOT, despite the fact that Baltimore Ave is on the High Injury Network.
