Yesterday, a woman wearing scrubs was hit while biking eastbound on the South Street Bridge. This is the most biked bridge in all of PA. On any given day, an order of magnitude more people walk, bike, or take the bus across this bridge than drive personal vehicles.

Speaking as someone who got a $100 ticket, it has made me more conscious of the speed limit on South Broad Street.
I know there are those who regard the cameras simply as a money grab. The FACTS show they influence behavior toward safety. See less

Speed enforcement cameras along
Broad Street seem to have nudged drivers to slow down: Violations. have dropped 67% from October 2025 through March 2026, according to the first available data from the Philadelphia Parking Authority.
Broad Street, also designated State Route 611, has 31 speed cameras spread over 13 miles between Philadelphia's northern and southern city limits. They began operating last September.
Since then, PPA has issued warnings or violations to nearly 800,000 speeders.

John Deere and I’s hometown of Rutland, VT (of West Wing fame) was a railroad hub and the largest city in the state at the turn of the century. The nearest interstate highway is at least an hour and a half away no matter which direction you’re headed which has made it a rust belty economic backwater
