This is a REALLY impressive book. Beautifully written, and covers a lot more ground than you'd expect from a monograph about a (very good) film.

truly my most "I am very basic and I don't care if things seem complicated I think they can also just be simple" opinion is that you should buy a house or a flat if you want a place to live in and I just don't really care if price goes up or price goes down, you have a roof! that was the whole point

The thing I really like about how Dis Fig is that - while she has a great scream that she'll indulge - she also has ways of singing and processing her voice that mesh perfectly with heavy/distorted music while retaining melody. A ragged edge here, a disorientating delay there.

big "if" but also... ooooof (re:water they are claiming that it would be air cooled and the expert quoted is very politely sceptical that it's possible at this scale.)
"If fully built out and operating at typical hyperscale utilisation, it would draw around 43-47 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy per day," he said.

He added that is roughly 25-30 per cent of Queensland's entire average daily electricity consumption.

Between Abundance and The Anxious Generation it's clear that major Australian policy can basically spring, whole cloth, from a single book. What I'm saying is that if we got Claire North's Slow Gods in front of Albanese I think we could get some arts funding going.
Cohesion - cohesion and togetherness. That is what Exodus required. The old song festivals of a few thousand people getting together every four years now swelled into endless churning rituals of celebration, yearning and praise. From the solo night-callers, wandering place to place to sing the ballads of the blackened moon, to the great gatherings beneath the song spires where forty thousand people would raise their voices as one, the message was clear. We are one, we are the people of Adjumir, the people of the forest. Some may live and some may die - some may make it to the stars and some may perish on the fires of Lhonoja, but our songs will live on.

The one very distinctive thing about this song (which this column does hint at when it mentions its blend of musical styles) is how absurdly prominent its bass is. It's a melancholy pop jam that gives subs a workout.

"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"
Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.
