Dunno if I tweeted about this but the train owner saw what I was doing and offered to slow down or speed up the engine for me. I am not joking! Alas I do not have that level of musical forethought so I just laughed, thanked him and recorded it at the tempo it was doing.

(I am finally making something with the steam engine sample. Lined up the first transient with the start of the bar. The thing is that part of the musical appeal of the recording is it's got a little grace note of sorts. Anyway!)

You get a lot of visual indicators in DAWs but folks - this might sound crazy! - you've still gotta listen to what you're making.

Me: Haha the whole "weird rationalists are the thought leaders of "AI"" thing has to be overblown! Anthropic: Dude, the machine has feelings and you've gotta pander to it lest it paperclip you.

I really like the way it uses myth-making to add extra weight to the story but tweaks the myths to suit the world. It's both serious and playful at the same time.

I love this one. It starts by asking how our memories shape us and then spirals outwards in a way that affirms that the personal is political. It has just enough plot to throw open new lines of inquiry when the old ones are getting stale but never so much that it overwhelms the characters.

I'm pretty sure that being encouraged to confess sins on a weekly basis is the cause of, conservatively, 60% of what's wrong with me.

Quite liked the aesthetics of it, after all! (Which is good because it is mostly about how it looks - although there is also some nice stuff about community.)

Bit weird that the concept of "an international film festival in Australia's third largest city" has had such a long running crises of identity/confidence.

Car wash is straight up beautiful. (Loved the gentle pulse throughout - that comes from key frames being interspersed with really bad interpolated ones, I guess?? Also a fan of cars being turned into stop-motion, jagged straight lines and chunky pixels in general.)

Glen's law*: Anything that's a little shitty is just shitty (720p, professional musicians playing something boring straight through). Anything that's really shitty is interesting. *Some hubris here

hmmm....
A still from Dry Leaf in which a man is framed by a green gate. It does have the pretty, impressionist vibe that reminds me of the flower shot from 28 Days Later and not... every other shot from 28 Days Later.

can a film really be punk rock if it was made within the studio system, with professional level gear operated by experienced crew who had permits, and then distributed in wide release

I'm a little suspicious of the idea that there was ever a time when young men weren't being fed bizarre ideas about romance. Are things really worse than, say, 2005, when The Game was a bestseller?

Yeah, can say that, as someone who quite likes 1989, Opalite is shockingly dull. But I suppose the fans aren't buying the music so much as they're buying the fairytale wedding.

on a quality level anyway. obviously shows and parasocial engagement are a huge part of the deal that LLMs can't really replicate and I guess that comes under "respect"

Like, I'm open to the idea that those agents were communicating with each other (but if it's in plaintext are we sure it's not just notes for humans following along?) but this is a silly comparison to make.

Glen @bigsigh.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I mean this is kind of being a dickhead because there is a pretty clear distinction between anthropomorphising, or personification, and the way in which ascribing human motivations to LLMs is understood literally. It's disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

truly my most "I am very basic and I don't care if things seem complicated I think they can also just be simple" opinion is that you should buy a house or a flat if you want a place to live in and I just don't really care if price goes up or price goes down, you have a roof! that was the whole point
