Car adman turned road safety and sustainability advocate Tom Flood to speak in Dublin
Tom Flood -- whose work used to include car advertising but who turned his skills to promoting road safety and mobility beyond cars -- is to speak at an event in Dublin on September 22nd. The event's organisers point out that Flood is renowned for his efforts to reframe the narrative around road safety, road violence and active transportation. If you haven't heard of his name, you might have seen one of his images shared on social media, usually branded with his company's name, Rovélo Creative.

Young people are able to: Drive a moped at age 16 Drive a motorcycle at age 16 Drive a tractor at age 16 Drive a car at age 17 But new proposals will mean they can't ride an e-scooter until they are 18!

It's already illegal for under 16s to ride e-scooters and e-bikes. Not sure if raising the age limit by 2 years will have much effect on those that ignore the current law.

Maybe change the law to fine parents €2,000 every time a child is caught using an e-scooter or e-bike. And if the Garda want a quick win, send someone around the children's wards taking names.

All the shocking adverts or appeals to be more careful don't do much to moderate our driving style. So what's left? We need to invest in making our roads safer. Not make our cars safer, or our drivers safer. Our roads. Redesign them to force people to slow down and act with more caution.

Big Ride @bigride.eu · 04/05/2026
We normalise road deaths as a fact of life. We shake our heads and say how terrible it is, but don't actually do anything to help make our roads safer. We could hire 10,000 extra Guards and there still wouldn't be enough to police our roads.

One major thing that sold me on the Dutch bicycle design was the upright ergonomics. No back pain, no wrist pain, just upright, face forward riding that let me take in the world ahead without the hunched over strain.

What do you mean it's obviously AI generated? How can you tell?
AI generated image of a cargo bike on a cobbled road, supposedly in Dublin. There is a pub called the Brazen Head that looks nothing like the real one. And the halfpenny food bridge which goes over the River Liffey now goes over a road with a double decker bus on it!

It's obviously fake!

The arrogance of people who tell others what clothes and headgear they should wear doing daily things like cycling to the shop is unreal. And none of them willing to wear high-vis or helmets in their cars "if it saves one life". Anything, but safer streets, and enforcement of existing laws.

The Irish government is victim blaming people who cycle and scoot. Rather than making it safer for sustainable and active travel, they are attempting to stigmatize people who don't wear the right clothes or PPE. The implication is that those who don't wear PPE are asking to be injured.

If you're going to make cyclists wear high vis clothes and a helmet then you should do the same for motorists. Motorists are nearly invisible inside their vehicles at night, and there are far more head injuries that take place inside cars than for cyclists.

Using the bus for the last week has gotten old quite quickly, especially when the journey takes twice as long as cycling, and especially when the bus is so full it doesn't even stop at the bus stop.

My bike has been sitting in the shed unused for a whole week now. The fact that it uses a carbon belt instead of a chain means that I've had to wait over a week to get a belt shipped from Germany rather than buying a new chain from my local bike shop.

I once fell off my bike when a wheel got trapped in the Luas track here on James Street. Luckily the driver of the bin lorry behind me was paying attention and stopped in time. That was 15 years ago, and the road is still just as dangerous to cyclists today! www.dublininquirer.com/despite-repe...

The good news is that that the drive belt for my bike is covered under warranty. The bad news is that it will take a week or more to arrive. That means my bicycle, my primary form of transport, is out of action. I'll have to work out another way to get places. I wish I hadn't sold my second bike!

Technically it was my belt that snapped not my chain - because I have a belt drive bike - but it's easier to say chain. Eithe way I thought those things were meant to be indestructible?
