I have had to use AI at work recently bc I volunteered for a pilot program in our department bc all the other people on the project were pro-AI and I was like “this team needs a skeptic.” It is week 7 of an 18 week trial and so far every person on the project has decided it isn't worth using.

I somehow missed that Strega Nona got her own USPS Forever stamp in 2023! Enjoy that along with the delightful fan art from Trungles in the original thread!
A forever U.S. stamp of Tomie dePaola's Strega Nona. Strega Nona is standing outside of her house, looking at a peacock sitting in a tree. She is holding her cauldron (though there are no pasta making shenanigans captured in this moment!)

I saw a production of Strega Nona at the Children's Theatre Company when I was a kid and just adored it! Love seeing this.

If you've followed AI detection closely, you should know how fraught these detectors are and how they can often return false positives (including Pangram!). Your accusations lack due diligence and undermine a creative's hard work.

Frustrating Kundieza had to even put that out, but highlights how ridiculous the situation is. Wrote it for the love of the story and there's no way to even know a good story is going to make it to the shortlist from someone else's nomination!

In light of some magazines pulling scummy things on creators lately, I’m doing a little thread on short story rights. I don't want anybody getting taken advantage of. Also, if you're new, this stuff can be confusing!

I enjoyed RRR quite a bit when I watched it, but your comments here remind me of my thoughts of how many times RRR underlined the yin and yang nature of Raju and Bheem. "I get it already! Give us another musical dance-off or let them kick the crap out of some sneering Brit again!" 🤣

Ebert site review seems to suggest she's still the same terrible person, but adds some depth to where she's just fitting in with the novel's major theme of "you are what you choose to be." I always read her that way, but the debates about her character suggest others have not.

Wow, this is awesome! Glad you were able to explore Lee's character more (he was my favorite in the book on first read, years ago). That you all could add more depth to Lee makes me want to watch this even more.

It's time for the public to learn that public services cannot run on the concept of doing more with less. When there are large cuts to services that rely on public monies, people should feel the results. Libraries, universities, etc. need to stop trying to lessen the visibility of funding cuts.

I often have one of the Grand Slams on while I'm grading or doing something else. But I'm at home and I didn't pay thousands to fly and see the event in person: the sight of so many fans staring at their phones mid-match is a bizarre one.

Good to know! I started keeping track of tennis again in about 2021 after not paying much attention since the aughts, and she's been steadily doing better that whole time, so she's come to be one of the ones I root for. I do wish it was less of a rich person's sport.

I don't really have the breadth of player background knowledge to comment much. There are players that hang around for years on the fringes for years before moving up, but I have no clue about their financial backgrounds. As I said, I'm sure it helped her, but it didn't guarantee her success.

I mean, the money helps (and I hadn't heard this about them either), but... they're both hard-working and skilled players that earned that reputation on the court. Undoubtedly it helped them get some of their training, etc., but they're still good players.

And with alt text as I accidentally clicked post before doing that.
Picture of an Atlantic article headline saying "Emma Cline's gut-twisting new novel, "Switzy" is a wonder of anti-escapism, the rare work of fiction that looks death squarely in the eye, Hillary Kelly writes:"

I get the distinction this article blurb is trying to make, but at the same time... saying death is rarely the major focus of fiction kind of flies in the face of a lot of fiction. Most fiction is like Harry saying to Sally: "I spend hours, I spend days thinking about death..."

Given that we’re currently in a situation where any use of AI in published writing workflow risks severe reputational damage (inadvertent plagiarism is more or less baked in) this seems, uh, not well thought through.

I'm in this weird quandary of... will it help the furloughed people to buy the game now, or will it just enrich the execs that made the bad decisions that led to their running "out of funds just short of the game's release."

Good question--she could be surprising with her thinking on writing! Feels like she would suggest they go and write what they wanted as they would not want what she wrote on spec. But that's my vibes after reading The Language of the Night a year or so ago.

Jon Hassler, a Minnesotan author, does this so well in Grand Opening. He'll move between four people in the same scene, showing how their view of the events differs (often humorously). If on a winter's night a traveler, by Italo Calvino changes up the kind of book it is between chapters!

I liked this passage for how it talks about the interaction between a reader and the text, but I'm still not a fan of "death of the author" or how Le Guin argues for it. It feels like an overdone pushback against the primacy of "the author."

Man, I dunno. Does buying the game prove to the suits they were dumb to do the furloughs before reviews even hit? Or is this a sign that the game's optimization and bug issues at launch aren't going to be adjusted?

It's the same reason "AI" causes my brain to fuse in annoyance as a teacher. Oh, my students aren't allowed to plagiarize, but the plagiarism machines are okay for them to use, according to some? The hypocrisy of this moment is something.
