strangely, some of the games with the most longevity end up being ones like Traveller that just don’t have levels. when a lot of the progression ends up being stuff like equipment, retainers, and in-world power, the sky really is the limit

unsure whether or not i should have armour and weapon restrictions. it mainly comes down to the fact i already have something to curb the use of heavier armours -- weight. heavy armour and a shield might take up half your inventory, so it's wise to pack a bit less. im just not sure if thats enough!

one thing I’m a bit surprised about is that nobody has suggested a resolution system like BitD for skill subsystems in OSR games. tweak the probabilities so you succeed on 5-6 and cap checks at 6 dice and I feel like that’s really robust? guess people aren’t looking at newer games as much perhaps!

i think the law/chaos divide is leagues more interesting than the good/evil divide because either extreme can be really bad! extreme law results in totalitarian regimes and stagnancy, while extreme chaos is endless change and destruction. only trouble is saying it like that makes you seem a centrist

the big draw points of the OSR as a whole for me are definitely its modularity and the sheer amount of stuff people have made for it over the years. if I need to do a particular thing, chances are someone else has made rules for it already, or it’s not gonna be hard to make something up.

one of the things i find the most trouble grappling with in worldbuilding in fantasy, especially tabletop RPGs, is assumptions. if you call something a goblin then people have preconceived notions of what that's going to look like and how it's going to operate.

thinking of doing an abstract wealth system. party has a “wealth” track that can get pretty darn high. it goes up with the accruement of treasure, and goes down when you make big purchases — hiring mercenary soldiers or building a stronghold would qualify, but buying food wouldn’t

With my system I’m really wanting to have robust rules for downtime. I think the ideal adventuring year consists of 3 main adventures with downtime in-between, alongside an extended period of downtime over the winter
