I promise I am not using AI in any part of the process: not the reading (which is why it takes so long), not the rejection emails, not the cover copy or the taglines. The sense of pride I feel when I finally nail cover copy will not be taken from me, even if the process feels like blood from a stone

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

September 2026 Reading Wrap-Up
September was a great month, reading wise! Not only did I post ten reviews, but four of those were five stars, which has never happened before! Now, I did have a few three star reviews, but overall I'm very pleased. And I don't know if I can even pick which of the five star books I loved the most. Below are the books I read and reviewed last month, linked to my reviews if you missed them:

Actually managed, after nearly a full day of trying, to get a doctor's appointment. Got a scrip for antibiotics. Now to take them and just hope they take care of the problem. I am very tired of getting random bouts of cellulitis. Like, why? Why does body hate? Why bacteria love? Just why?

Oh thank fuck, I FINALLY managed to get a virtual appointment today, after almost an entire day of trying multiple options. Hopefully I can get antibiotics and get this taken care of. Maybe then I won't get cellulitis again until next year.

If I can't get an appointment today, my next hope for a clinic appointment is on Sunday, because in this city it's illegal to be sick on Saturdays, I guess.

I have a very bad infection in my outer ear. The only clinic that MIGHT have an appointment today doesn't take calls until 4:30; all other clinics are closed or full. 1 has a virtual booking system that doesn't work. Telehealth appointment scheduling won't work. FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

In his essay, which The Independent has seen, Falade writes that his first language – Yorùbá – is “a highly lyrical dialect rich in proverbs, aphorisms, metaphors, parallelism” – and “not X, but Y” constructions – many features of which, he notes, are now the hallmarks of AI-generated writing.
Falade explains that he “drew on Yorùbá oral storytelling traditions while writing Call Me, I’ll Hide the Body. As a Yorùbá writer telling a voice-driven thriller, it felt natural that the rhythms, sarcasm, humor, and narrative techniques of my culture would shape the novel’s voice.”
It was a voice that impressed publishers enough that 14 of them entered into an auction in the US alone to bid for the debut novel. In his essay, Falade offers an example of how the Yorùbá dialect works. “Even an insult should display imagination,” he writes. “A blunt ‘You jerk!’ or ‘Go to hell’ would disappoint your Yorùbá ancestors. They might turn in their graves if you wasted an insult by making it ordinary. We say things like: Ẹ rí bí orí ẹ ṣe rí pẹlẹbẹ bí ìdí ìgbákọ (‘See how flat your head is, like the bottom of a food scoop’). But place something along [those] lines … in a manuscript, and an editor trained to fear every unfamiliar metaphor may swear on their life that some hallucinating machine wrote it.”
He went through his manuscript after researching the writing features people associate with AI. “There were 18 ‘not X, but Y’ constructions and 46 em dashes,” he writes. “A career I spent years building was derailed because people unfamiliar with the Yorùbá rhetoric and oral storytelling traditions that shaped my narrative voice concluded, out of sheer cultural ignorance, that a chatbot must have written my work.”
It is ironic then that Falade tells me the reason his manuscript got so much attention was because of its unique voice. “They told me they handle thousands of manuscripts yearly and had not found one that sounded like mine.”
