The discourse then became this thing of pro-Israel versus anti-Israel, Zionist anti-Zionist antizionist do we capitalize this or hyphenate that and on and on and frankly I think what a lot of Jews experienced but didn’t articulate was a profound disappointment in what Israel was meant to mean in terms of Jews’ place in the world, then demonstrably was not. Whether your specific politics and interpretation of events pointed you towards anger at Netanyahu and other Israeli leadership for not averting the Hamas attacks or at the severity of the retribution or whether you wish Israel had been more aggressive still, I think this sudden stark awareness that Zionism had failed to do what it was meant to do underlies so much here.

As someone with an autism diagnosis, I know full well that there are people born radically neurodivergent. But even the misdiagnosed are doubtless suffering a legitimate distress that they are trying to explain..

Super piece that takes rising mental distress seriously while analysing diagnostic culture in relation to the rise of the neurological subject and how neuro-diagnoses might help explain the gap between impossible performance expectations & the 21st century’s sidelined question of who we really are.

We've been doing this for my whole life — longer than that, if you consider all the consciousness raising circles that led to things like TBTN — and while there is certainly some utility in survivors sharing stories it is not the systemic change that people seem to expect.

We did this already and it was an exercise of limited utility and while I’m sure some individuals benefited from learning they are not alone it is simply not a real tool for effecting systemic change.

So I was diagnosed a year ago with pernicious anemia which is caused by autoimmune gastritis, an attack on parietal cells and intrinsic factor. This has caused a B12 deficiency, an iron deficiency, a folate deficiency, and SIBO. It was preceded by two years of chronic hives.

I'm begging people to understand that immunity exists. COVID was only a major threat because it was novel. Even if your first COVID infection caused bizarre health consequences years later, it doesn't mean later infections will.

People are not sharing the lesbian bar masking story because we think that’s what all lesbians or people with pronouns are like We’re sharing it because we all know these kind of bullies, they’ve terrorized us personally, and we’re tired of it in a time when real oppression is happening

People who have so far been extremely successful in mandating extreme minority opinions by exploiting marginalized people’s desire to show solidarity & pay inclusion forward are angry that their absurd demands (which they make in similar ways across the country) are being spotlighted

The demand to validate and engage in people’s OCD rituals is in fact pretty triggering for me as someone in recovery from abuse-induced OCD, but that’s not a condition people care about the way “I’ve become convinced I can avoid ever getting sick” is

No, it targets people who think that a bar going from having a mask mandate seven nights a week to having a mask mandate six nights a week is *literally genocidal*, and I don't have so much contempt for the disabled, chronically ill, or COVID-conscious to believe that they all think that.
A Bluesky post: "Hey so uhhhhh that Boston Globe story about the lesbian bar relaxing its covid rules is an *absolute fucking hit piece* targeting the disabled, chronically ill, and covid-conscious and it would be great if folks sharing and joking about it could recognize that framing."

that isn't to say that some parents aren't total pieces of shit who should be excluded from your life, I'm estranged from one of mine for this exact reason (though I regret that now), but I don't believe there's a whole generation of Evil Parents who deserve to be cut out because they're Evil.

A lot easier and more opaque I should say. Back in the day, I'm not sure parents even knew they were being ghosted by their kids for a good while.

(it's just more apparent now because cutting off parents used to be a lot easier, people would just fuck off out of town then never answer their phone, you didn't have to see them all the time on Facebook or respond to their texts)

I can explain this: it's a preemptive strike against having to take care of them when they're very old and infirm, and children have been doing it to their parents for generations. It's always - always - left to the most responsible sibling to carry the burden.

Apart from a world in which no one sees anyone’s face in public being chillingly dystopian, and an attitude of “don’t come near me you hazardous vector of contagion” antithetical to socialist assembly, they’re not able to see that the mask has been adopted by ICE & far-right militias.

This would explain the debt, as that bar probably didn’t sell enough drinks to even cover costs. How could it, when the patrons’ mouths are well/fitted with a barrier to consumption?

"Previously, patrons were required to wear a well-fitted KN-95 mask 'or better' at all times." How does at ALL times work in a bar? Were you supposed to go outside with your drink to consume it? Like I'm not trying to be a dick about people wanting to mask, just do not understand the mechanics here

Maybe not the point but maybe kind of is given the article—I'm at a complete loss for how "mask at ALL times" is supposed to work for a bar, because reading how these people reacted to the attempt at the policy change it sure sounds like it was intended to be taken extremely literally up until then.

Which disabled people were being made a spectacle of? Not one person cited or described in the story was identified as disabled or immunocompromised. And I read through it again just to make sure. To the extent that people were being made a spectacle of, it wasn‘t because they were disabled.

EtanaRachel @bibliophelia94.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
You don't have empathy for "the disabled" though. You don't have empathy for anyone who's disability may make wearing a mask difficult. Your interest is in framing a poorly defined umbrella diagnosis as carte blanche to demand that everybody mask indefinitely long after COVID stopped being pandemic.

The Last Ditch episode is to me a black comedy about one of our Achilles heels: our tendency to become hypercritical and tear each other down when we don't share 101% of our opinions. If we have a healthy self-critical function, we should not be surprised when allies are not 100% in alignment.

EtanaRachel @bibliophelia94.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Of course they should but if you're going to claim to be that severely immunocompromised (and I beg you all to actually learn what that entails) your life is going to be limited! That's just what disability does to you!
