@andyburnham.bsky.social is proving to be as feckless as last guy! All he can offer to end neoliberalism is warm words. Fiscal rules are a form of neoliberalism. And Greens who passed a landmark motion for gov spending that prioritises long term objectives are being drowned out by ZiR motion!

How can this guy criticise Houthis for wanting to take their country back to middle ages, when Saudi Arabia has many medieval practices and thinks it's ok to murder journalists critical of it! Why are we allies?? #r4today

This is problem with neoliberal debt fetishism: it means right wing & far right can use lack of gov spending on basics, like healthcare, as a reason not to help the desperate asylum seekers. We can do both! Do you think cutting spending on asylum system, will free up workers for NHS—no! #r4today

Why do the today programme take the IFS seriously? They're providing a one-sided neoliberal view of macroeconomics. You don't cut the debt by crudely cutting the deficit, since you push problems to other areas. It's like 14 years of tory austerity never happened! #r4today

Polanski not to staying for vote is bad leadership, irrespective of what you think of motion & Robinson's hostile questioning. It's also bad leadership the way he handled the question of motion itself, since he should be prioritising the Green's message on climate & economy. #r4today

I think it is good in principle, but ultimately I think it is naive that the whole party membership can decide party policy. The leadership has to take ownership of policy and do the politicking on its behalf, which is not possible if they are so diametrically opposed!

But don't you see that even if true—which I think is highly debatable—that no one in the public will see anything other than the Green party is attacking Jews desire to have a safe haven (& right wing media will spin this as anti-Semitism). This is bad politics that doesn't actually achieve much.

Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The point is that most people equate Zionism with idea of providing Jewish people with a safe haven & not necessarily ethnonationalist implementation that is current state of Israel. It's just a distraction and just when Greens had a chance of differentiating themselves from Labour on economics!

Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The Greens considered a landmark motion to radically change economic policy to unlock power of state including fiscal referees—rather than rules—that determine spending is the right level to ensure long term growth. Sadly instead media is talking about an ill conceived motion on Zionism. #r4today

What a ridiculous argument that you earn £1 more & you don't get benefit, which is the nature of all thresholds. The point is that the threshold is such that the person to lose it is rich enough that it doesn't very significantly affect them. I would argue that £100k is sufficient #bbclaurak

Tories & Badenoch have no ideas of other than austerity (except for rich). But despite an inspiring speech from Burnham, it's meaningless without power to spend. Yet media is again manufacturing consensus around another form of austerity which are fiscal rules & fear of bond markets #bbclaurak

As a Brit I dont want Scotland to leave UK, because I believe we're always stronger together, but if you do you're best option is 3, but I suspect the EU won't allow you to keep your own currency. Going back to my original post, as UK there is a better chance of the EU agreeing to UK not adopting €

Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Nothing I've said is from an English perspective, but only about currency. And you didn't address my question of what currency independent Scotland would have: 1) UK £, 2) € or 3) new Scottish currency? 1 & 2 give up Scotland's fiscal independence, while 3 could be incompatible with joining EU.
100
Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Look I get it: controlling your own destiny as Scots is powerful & emotional. If you leave UK & join EU without joining eurozone then maybe it's worth it. But what currency would you have: if you have the pound then you have no fiscal independence & that's not great for Scotland's interests.

Insightful interview with @yanisvaroufakis.bsky.social that largely confirms most people in charge know there's better way to run capitalism, but they simply don't care! If @andyburnham.bsky.social was serious about ending neoliberalism he needs to ditch fiscal rules & get better advisors.

See my other reply: the eurozone is a neoliberal shitshow! Yes I have sympathy for Scotland that as UK we keep voting in inept Tory govs and Labour ones that simply dilute their ineptness! However, if you think joining eurozone is better, I'm saying that you're sorely mistaken!

As part of UK under a single sovereign currency different parts of country can in principle benefit from total economic growth of country even if that region isn't doing so well. Contrast that with euro which dictates each member country cannot run a large deficit, effectively imposing austerity.

Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
More doom loop economics from Burnham & Healey. No economics commentator or corporate economists often interviewed will provide a Keynesian perspective, for good reason it's not in interests of private capital to have a strong competitor to command the economic resources of a country. #econsky

I find it slightly ironic that SNP see benefit of being in economic block, yet want to leave UK. I suspect if they joined as an independent country they would be forced to adopt euro — a bad idea & neoliberalism personified — whilst joining with UK with a better bargaining position we could say no.

But nonetheless I think we need a balanced economy that has some level of industrial base capacity, which will help out trade position with the rest of the world. Also I don't see infrastructure spending as for the government it is to provide the basis of economic growth including private sector.

Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I broadly agree that Labour is still stuck with an old view of economy which ignores not only point I made about gov debt, but also that its non circular nature has led to the many environmental crises we see in the world from climate change to plastic pollution and devastating our biodiversity..

And physics progresses by empiricism: theories that do not survive experimental testing are considered invalid. In economics Keynes' theories provide an explanative power that classical economics fails to: the Great depression of 1920s, post war boom, the GFC of 2008, the oil shock of the 70s.

Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I've already given you main reason why we should borrow despite what bond markets say, since cost of inaction in long term is greater. Think about this: if gov can spend by BoE printing money, what does it mean for the government to borrow? It is not borrowing in any normal sense of the word.
100
Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Did I have you at all? Where did I lose you :-) Yes Keynes is more correct compared to classical economics, which makes the most ludicrous assumptions.. so you think we shouldn't follow Keynes because the private sector is more competent??
100
Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
on short term returns, we need to spend to ensure that future growth. Also we aren't helpless, we have a sovereign currency and a BoE that could back the pound.. but they won't because they have a classical economics/neoliberal mindset.
100
Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Governments need to spend to ensure the foundations of progress and growth in the future. We have the counterfactual of what happens when you don't — 14 years of Tory austerity which leads to anemic growth & consequently *higher debt*. Even if the bond markets responds badly because of their focus..

Burnham's speech was moving & well crafted. He said a lot of the right things diagnosing the roots of problems due to neoliberalism which deindustrialised the economy & privatised basic services. Yet, fiscal rules are a form of neoliberalism and you can't fix the country on the cheap!! #r4today

Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I don't think reindustrialisation is bad, but as Greens we can focus on new Green industries. We also shouldn't be too churlish in the face of the speech which said many good things, but point out, for example, fiscal rules are a form of neoliberalism and you can't enact major change on the cheap!

As well strengthening international & multilateral institutions I also think we need to radically change the basis of world trade along the lines that Keynes envisaged at Bretton Woods in 1944—but ofc vetoed by the USA—which helps decouple national economic objectives from international trade.
