The outer rim inscribed "issued by the Queen's Nursing Institute" with a crown at the top. the centre of the oval is cut out, with an intertwined capital "N" and "D" within the oval (for District Nursing). the badge was issued to nurses trained by the QNI who had passed their exams and became QNI members. They were known as Queen's Nurses. It may nomt seem it, but having a national network of specialist non-hospital nurses was revolutionary!
