Supernova SN 1604, also known as Kepler's Star, in Ophiuchus, was first seen by observers in northern Italy #OTD 1604. It was visible during the day for over three weeks. The star was named after Johannes Kepler, who followed the object for an entire year, even though he was not its first observer.

This combined image - from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, Hubble Space Telescope, and Chandra X-ray Observatory - unveils a bubble-shaped shroud of gas and dust that is 14 light-years wide and is expanding at 2,000 kilometers per second. Painting entitled "Above Baikonur". This depicts the Salyut 6 space station, with two Soyuz spacecraft docked, in orbit over the Baikonur area in Kazakhstan. The large body of water is the Aral Sea. The painting was taken into orbit by the Soviet/Czech crew of Soyuz 28 (2 March 1978), and was returned by the Soviet/Polish crew of Soyuz 30 (4 July 1978). The painting has been signed by cosmonauts W.Kovalyonok, A.Ivanchenkov, P.Klimuk and M.Hermaszewski: the stamps of the Soviet and Polish space authorities appear at the bottom.
