A couple weeks ago, on our way home from the Liz Phair/Sleater Kinney concert, we saw Sliwa just hanging out on a subway platform, chatting with people and doing selfies. Dude just looked _happy_.

I really need to put some work into my intended playlist: "St. Vincent is PJ Harvey's secret child. We will not be answering questions."

"Oh, that one song from Kasabian! Haven't heard that in a while..." (remembers that the most transphobic nominal friend I had in the before times loved that song) "...next."

I've been offered a date for FFS, in a month and a half, and I am anxious as hell about whether I'm ready, if it's the right time, etc. So I'm having a call with my dad tonight to talk it through and no, this is not insane, I swear. At the very least, he's who I'd like to help me in early recovery.

This thread has convinced me that there are exactly two types of people with Richard Stallman-style emacs user beards: toxic nerds and, well, repressed trans women introduced to emacs at a young age. Hi, I was in that category. =)

There are very few people I follow on here that I make a specific effort to check their full timeline when I see them pop up in the feed, just to make sure I don’t miss anything. @maysuser.name is one of them.

The move starts in earnest today! Heading over to my new place shortly, with two suitcases, a camping chair, a bunch of packages waiting there for me, and a Verizon appointment between 10:30 and 12:30. I’m a bit annoyed that my curtains aren’t arriving til Monday, but I’ll make do.

If I’m gonna be stuck being too anxious to eat sufficiently on a consistent basis for a few weeks thanks to anxiety, I should at least lose some of this damned belly fat in the process, right? Doesn’t that seem like how the world should work?

Dangit, wasn’t in the right place to start Pluribus. I need something cozy to watch…

Well, if my upstairs neighbors were ever going to get annoyingly loud, I guess I can tolerate it happening more when it’s my last weekend in this unit.

Getting the move logistics in a really good place with until Saturday to finish off the last bits did a great job on my "move itself" anxiety, but regrettably, that gave space for my "oh no I'll have moved what if it's awful" anxiety.

It’s kind of amazing that the rationalist/AI “safety” crowd has managed to do a worse Bay Area cult than the traditional cult of the founder.

(eliza)Beth! @beth.banana.management · 27/09/2026
I’m not gonna say I’m 100% done prepping/packing for my move on Saturday, but I feel like I’m over 80% done in terms of time and stress at least? And about as far along as I can be while still living here for another five+ days. Huh.

The rationalist doom/sex/cnc cult stories are making me even happier to have left the Bay Area 9 years ago and be safely ensconced at a New York-based tech company founded by a couple rather normie-appearing French late Gen Xers.

I remember someone telling me about the Harry Potter "rationalist" fan fic like 18 years ago, and having the immediate reaction of "why the hell would I want to read that?" on multiple levels.

Even in the Upper East Side (for one more week!), the blatantly obvious Republican candidate tries to hide her party with a bit about the "independent line".

Wrapping up today's move prep - decent progress has been made! Lots of bags of recycling, trash, and clothes to go to Goodwill! Some preemptive packing and sorting! All told, I feel extremely confident that even if I did basically nothing in the next six days, the move would go alright.

Earlier this week, I woke up at 1am from an elaborate dream in which I found myself in Some European Capital and remembered I could take the train from there to an...island? Hill town? Unclear exactly...that I'd visited a couple times before, once on my own, once with my mom.

I have prepared for the possibility of losing internet over the weekend by downloading Pluribus to finally watch it during breaks from move prep.

The moment when I realized my female friends are frequently complimenting this one specific ribbed top specifically because its ribbing makes my boobs look particularly good.

Wait, why did I think it was a good idea to email my sister to try to see if she's willing to engage with the reality of who I am, now of all times, while I'm ten days out from moving and therefore am in a constant low grade panic attack? Geez, Beth, put some more on your plate, why not.

I appreciate my friend who periodically sends me texts informing me of lifestyle choices I am now obligated to make as a woman: consume pumpkin spice drinks, acquire frankly too many pillows...

Oh riiiiight, it's General Assembly week. That's why things seem generally more insane than normal in Manhattan.

The combination of an overall amazing weekend with a dear, dear friend, getting misgendered at Sephora yesterday, and mounting anxiety for my move two weekends from now has led to me hiding in a room at the office and rereading @transcect.bsky.social's Under Stagelights to decompress.

My friend and I split up for the late afternoon, but need to get back together soon to go to the concert, and her phone has been offline for the last hour or so. I am anxious.

OK, first partial day and evening with ex were absolutely amazing. We make so much more sense as girl friends than we did in a relationship and I am joyous.

I'm a little nervous about seeing my 2000s ex for the first time in ages for a number of reasons, but the one I'm most nervous about is proving to her that, twenty years and a gender realization later, I actually am capable of dressing myself now. =)

I got too many gel manicures in a row and my nails started disintegrating, so I took a few months off. Went back to the nail salon for the first time in a while today and said fuck it - got my first dip powder manicure and wowwwwww I love it.

I have decided my nails have recovered from "too many gel manicures" enough after three months, so I'm getting a proper SNS manicure tomorrow to hopefully last me through the next few weeks of move prep and move. 🤞

I saw my voice coach on Friday, looking for some help tightening up my pitch range. She suggested practicing stretching my vowels through reciting something regularly. Which has led to me now re-memorizing Yeats' The Second Coming because why not.

Another bit of pre move progress today. I'm still intimidated by the volume of clothes to dispose of, but everything else is starting to feel...not easy to manage exactly, but definitely manageable.

I keep making the mistake of looking at Bluesky when I am not at all in the mood for whatever The Discourse is at the moment. Bad habit of mine.

The last two times I moved, I had months between the move being scheduled and it actually happening, and I still ended up stressed out of my mind for the last few weeks. This time, I've got three weeks. Uhoh.

I opted not to spend a couple hundred more bucks a month for a higher floor for my new apartment just to watch storms roll in…because I can just go up to the 51st floor lounge and roof deck to watch storms roll in instead.

Ok, I actually managed to check off one task my pre-move todo list. It was probably the easiest (break down the giant pile of cardboard boxes I had lying around the apartment due to the lack of anywhere official to dispose of them in my dumpster fire of a building) but still, box checked.

I ordered a halter top from Aritzia (yeah, I’m 48 and I’m not Aritzia’s target market, shush) but it’s backless so I can’t wear my beloved push-up bras with it. Now I’m on a quest to find a suitably helpful strapless low back push-up bra. Wish me luck. Or a growth spurt.

Not gonna lie, I'm a little disappointed that Liz Phair's setlist on her current tour is only about half songs from Exile in Guyville. I feel mean saying this, but I'm 100% there for the first album alone. =)

Sooooo I signed a lease on a new apartment, and now I'm in a multi-day light panic attack at The Idea Of Change, the process of moving, and the fact that I'm technically breaking my lease to move. Sigh.
