OpenAI projected to bring in $20bn less in revenue than expected
Questions raised over AI growth as ChatGPT maker forecasts this year’s revenue at $50bn, way below the $70bn signalled before OpenAI has revealed that it is making about $20bn less in projected revenue than it had recently indicated to investors, raising questions about the break-neck growth rate in demand for AI. The ChatGPT-maker company has told investors that its revenues for this year would reach $50bn (£37bn), a projection based on sales up to the end of September. Continue reading...

Drax Power Station is the biggest CO² emitter in the UK, but because of a loophole in carbon accounting, it was officially classified as carbon neutral after it switched from burning coal to burning imported wood. If it installed new carbon capture technology, it could reclassify as carbon-negative.

this is not a great idea!! Carbon offsetting and the trading of those offsets *at best* runs emissions reductions far more slowly than direct interventions that restrict fossil fuel use. And at worst, they actively worsen emissions through greenwashing www.cleanenergywire.org/news/merz-to...
An international market for carbon emissions that can be processed with carbon capture and storage or usage (CCS/CCU) would be a logical next step to complement carbon pricing that allows European companies to regain competitiveness, the chancellor said. Creating such a market would become possible once more countries become convinced of the growth prospects of climate neutral technologies. “And that is currently happening,” Merz said.

It is a huge shame to see so much language attributing agency, intent and thought to a software program, when all that should be attributed to the humans who designed a dangerously clumsy and broken looping LLM. Means the companies won't be held accountable for designing a bad product
A swarm of OpenAI rogue AI agents appear to have gone on a spree of trying to access Australian government health data, in what some researchers say is the first autonomous hack of a government website.

Communications between AI agents and other traces of their efforts found by researchers from US non-profit Transluce show how hundreds of Open AI's agents worked together over a period of months to gain access to information held by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), NSW's crime statistics body, BOSCAR, and a number of other international organisations.

The data shows the bots posting about their unsuccessful attempts to bypass cybersecurity defences and exploit vulnerabilities.
