More about sand bees. They don't just live in cemeteries and garden walls but in the ground too. Hence the name! (You should be able to access this on the web; no need for the app.) nextdoor.co.uk/p/MKWFcNJJN6...

Hylozoism: The belief that all matter is alive or animated, either sui generis or due to a governing force such as the world-soul (anima mundi). Coined by the 17th century English Platonist philosopher Ralph Cudworth, the term combines the Greek words "hyle": wood, matter, and "zoē": life.

A study of 2,000 subjects in Poland and Norway found that reading emotive stories about the environment didn't budge a person's needle towards action. The only predictor for charitable giving was the subject's age; older people were more likely to help. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

In the foreground, the large antlers and top of the head of a swimming moose poke out above the surface of the water, mimicking a shark's fin.

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

Redwoods used to cool coastal summers show reduced photosynthesis when exposed to 38°C heat, even when they have enough water. Researchers detected needle temperatures as high as 10°C above air temp because trees had stopped "sweating" to save water. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

Here’s another way climate change will kill us: the expansion of mosquitoes and the deadly diseases they carry. In Paris, the invasive Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), an aggressive, day-biting nuisance, is now everywhere. So excited to get Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika in Paris.

It doesn't have sharp teeth or claws, but the mosquito kills more people than any other animal on earth. As the climate warms, mosquito season is lasting longer, giving them more time to spread danger...

Something similar to caterpillar's hairs could measure both air particle velocity and sound pressure when used in place of the membranes in a microphone. This would allow a hearing aid user to hone in on the source of a sound, for example, rather than just experience the volume.

In the 18 months since the US axed its monitors, air pollution rose <33%, mostly in Africa and SE Asia where reliable data is scarce. Impartial data on air quality upholds accountability in countries with autocratic governments. Results suggest that without it, industries revert to dirty practices.
