Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 25/02/2025We have a lovely class set of little ripple tanks that allow them to play around and observe wave behaviour 0121

Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 22/12/2024Well now I feel old. I get sry is sorry but what is nvm? 🤣 120
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 21/12/2024I like this one as a predict, observe and explain exercise to hammer home force on a current in a magnetic field and Fleming’s Left Hand Rule. 0131
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 19/12/2024But audio cassettes are back on sale now so I’m not sure this will be any time soon. 000
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 19/12/2024But isn’t the speed of light invariant 😉 Also there are materials with a higher refractive index. 000
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 12/12/2024I’ve turned up some real gems from @helenrey.bsky.social’s spreadsheets. A really great resource when first planning or refining your teaching of a topic. 083
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 04/12/2024Also although this sounds ridiculous, cover it in delicate glass baubles. 000
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 04/12/2024It looks like you are beyond the easy solution (don’t have a Christmas tree and cats in the same house), Can I advise a water pistol? 200
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 29/11/2024How do you service your VdG? New belt? Is there more to it? Ours aren’t working that well. The belt speed seems quite variable even with new belts. Might we need to replace motors or brushes? 100
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 29/11/2024Wow, a lot of hard work has obviously gone into this and it features so many great ideas explained really well with links and videos. If you want new ideas for teaching magnetism from KS3-5 this has plenty. 141

Reposted by Bernard RandStuart Hayward @stuartteachphys.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Depends a lot on the framing and impact. There's a lot to be said for lay noticing/questioning (I saw this... what's the thinking?) One of the problems with lesson observation is that we have entangled observing and evaluating, and then put a lot of weight on those evaluations. 111
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 21/11/2024I like this a lot. Non judgemental observations are really useful feedback. Direct suggestions probably require someone with significant domain knowledge to be useful and instructive. 010
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Here’s another hypothetical. You are a tailor with training and experience of measuring people and carefully stitching together fitted clothes. If someone who hadn’t ever sewn anything came and made suggestions of how to do your job better how would you value their feedback? 200
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Rejecting advice and feedback out of hand is not great, but questioning feedback because the provider doesn’t have sufficient understanding and insight to give useful feedback seems very sensible to me. 040
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 21/11/2024I’d listen to their feedback and potentially respond to it but on the whole I suspect I’d be fairly sceptical. 100

When two coherent waves superpose the phase difference will vary with path difference from the two sources as in two source interference and standing waves. The two are not exclusive. 010
Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 20/11/2024Just wanted to drop in and say a huge thank you. Your wave animations have been helping me teach waves for many years. You’ve done a great job with them. 120

Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 17/11/2024I don’t think it’s just the resistivity. I suspect a decent amount of the heat generated is from hysteresis during constant magnetisation and demagnetisation rather than just the induced currents. 010

Bernard Rand @bernardrand.bsky.social · 16/11/2024Not much detail in here but if you’ve got a low AC voltage supply then connect all the coils in parallel (I had a 0-25V). Then it’s mainly a case of playing with the inductance using cores and shading of the poles with different thicknesses of aluminium. docs.google.com/file/d/16xkg...docs.google.comDrinks Can Induction Motor.docx 020
