There‘s much to appreciate in Mamdani, but his insistence that culture isn’t a privilege of the rich is one of his strengths. It is reminiscent of how unions and the government treated it in the 1930s -art for the masses - paintings, music, opera, theater - democracy for all.

Hitchcock x Burks x Herrmann The director, the eye, the ear. From the dizzying heights of VERTIGO (1958) to the psychological fractures of MARNIE (1964), this trio redefined modern cinema. A decade of suspense, vivid imagery and beautiful, yet haunting music.

On March 28, 1963, Hitchcock’s "The Birds" hit U.S. theaters. On a $3.3M budget, it grossed $11.4M domestically. It features no musical score; Bernard Herrmann supervised a pioneering electronic soundscape using the Mixtur-Trautonium to create synthesized bird effects. 🎬🐦‍⬛

I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland. And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.
