Black excellence is a term coined, lamentably, during the Barack Obama presidency. It’s meant to celebrate the Herculean efforts Black people make to succeed despite systemic and social barriers like racism, bigotry, and all manner of invisible tripwires that make success harder. Become a billionaire like Beyoncé and Jay-Z? Black excellence. Become president? Black excellence. Become a Lantern? Honey, you just might be a Black Hal Jordan in the making. But every time I hear the phrase, my teeth itch. To me, “Black excellence” lives in the same area code as white people calling a Black man “King” as a compliment—well-intentioned, maybe, but pandering as hell.

My issue isn’t the term itself but the mindset behind it. The idea that Black people must be excellent to be worthy of celebration, status, or privilege. That mediocrity is unacceptable. That you must be exceptional on whatever sliding scale the moment demands, doing twice the work for half the validation. Black excellence is almost never self‑defined—it’s projected onto you, shaped by other people’s expectations rather than your own. It's a prison where your only solace is toxic gratitude for platitudes over self-affirmation. Having John reject that fool’s errand plight as the main hero of a primetime DC Studios series means more to me than any roadmap superhero timeline.

Just once in my life I would like to see a Democrat being interviewed by right wing media like Fox News or right wing media like every single other outlet treat their questions with the contempt they deserve. I know it's not going to fix everything or maybe even anything but how much coverage and how much groundswell of excitement from the base do you think it would inspire if when asked about "boys in girls sports" or some other stupid fucking culture war distraction one of them finally said "What the fuck are you talking about man? What's the worst that's going to happen the New York Times is gonna work overtime to make sure you don't get elected? They were already doing that buddy.

You simply say "Are you stupid? Do you think I am stupid? And do you think all of the people watching at home are stupid? Everyone sees through what you are doing. Using one group as a scapegoat for the very real problems everyone has – all caused by Republicans by the way – unlike this fake one you have made up. Dumb asshole."

Just go on the attack for once instead of sitting there trying to please your enemy who is in the process of trying to humiliate you.

And if you want to say something else true that almost no Democrat ever says for some reason you can top it off with a “Every single Republican in our lifetime has sought to make our lives worse in every way possible. I’d like to try to stop that.”

For me, I learned that I like very basic, minimal looks/colors with classic pieces as well as straight and slightly boxy/relaxed fits I like some streetwear and rocker influences too Also learned that I just don't like polos despite being called an "essential". Tried em, didn't feel right

IMO, the solution should not be to browbeat people into an old standard, but rather allow people to wear whatever they want. If someone can wear ducky pajamas in public, you can wear tailoring in any cut, color, and material. As options open up, dress can then be a source of pleasure.
