As a child, when I saw my first Lichenstein, I was delighted because I thought a comic artist had decided to paint larger panels as art. My dad gently corrected me. And even as a child, I asked if that wasn't stealing.

Talked to a guy yesterday that said Digger is easily the film of the year, maybe the film of the decade, Oscars should be plentiful, but then said “you really have to think and pay attention to appreciate it” and kept comparing it to his favorite film, Austin Powers.

Again, I am deeply sorry for subjecting the listeners to even just the summary of events in this comic. It should never be spoken of again. Also again, I love having @frankpittarese.bsky.social on the show. I’m only sorry that he’s not on more frequently.

It’s not an 80s book that would eventually become part of Vertigo without Arkham Asylum and things being weird there

Spooky season continues on Does This Come in Chromium as the great @frankpittarese.bsky.social joins me to discuss (sigh) 1994’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD #1. I’ll just say it, I’m sorry for picking this comic to talk about, but I am NOT sorry about talking to Frank! sites.libsyn.com/601360/site/...

If you don’t read this full episode description then… … Look, I don’t know. I’m just truly sorry for bringing this comic to the show.
Cover of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD #1 alongside the full episode description: On this episode Matt and special guest co-host Frank Pittarese quickly come to the realization that they would rather face down an army of the undead than talk about 1994's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: ZOMBIE GENESIS #1.

Technically this is a comic "based on" Matt's second favorite movie of all time, 1968's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. But honestly, associating this comic with the movie at all is a gigantic insult to the movie. If anything, this comic is more of a BAYWATCH "parody", which is not something one would expect when picking up a comic called NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD.

Look, it's a really terrible, no good, horrendous, painful, downright awful comic - so Matt and Frank do their best to avoid talking about it, like the way you avoid making direct eye contact with a crazy person.

Instead, Matt talks at length (big surprise there) about how and why NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD became such a significant part of his life, while Frank puts his years of editorial experience to use and explains to the listening audience what it takes to put together a successful comic based on a licensed property (spoiler alert: Frank wants all of you aspiring creators to nothing that the creators of this "comic" did).

Oh, and this comic isn't called NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: ZOMBIE GENESIS, it's just NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD - but Matt finds that offensive on levels heretofore unknown, so he's added ZOMBIE GENESIS to the title. It doesn't make the comic better, but it does further separate it from the movie, and today that counts as a win.

Marvel needs a cross-media promotional event where Holland & Zendaya's Pete/MJ tie the knot onscreen the same summer the Parker-Watson marriage is restored in the 616, coupled with collections of the early marriage era material and the Conway ASM run marketed as romance.

The Parker Legacy (Thanks for the memories, Pete!) @benreilly149.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
So the big elephant in the room is still OMD and Marvel's refusal to restore the Parker-Watson marriage. That's the biggest metric of restoring credibility with fans imo, and it will be a long road even if they do after pulling out the rug from under Spencer's feet.

Glad to see Marvel adopting the compendium format. For Spider-Man "bricks," would love to see DeMatteis/Buscema SSM run (only recently collected in omni, immediately went out of print) the DeFalco/Frenz ASM era (never collected in its entirety) & Clone Saga (affordability here is a big plus).
