It also implies that police murders are state sanctioned executions which is all kinds of problematic

I probably agree you should get a bot to book your flights, mostly because I don't trust them to always get it right, not because booking flights is a valuable part of the human experience

I like that they sat trump down and told him "AI is dangerous because it will become super inteligence and kill us all" and the only think trump heard was super inteligence, decided he liked the term and called it a day

In 1946 Willie Francies survived a botched electric chair execution. The supreme court rejected the legal argument that the state should only get a single try at the execution.

There is legal precedent. Unfortunately it leans the other way. In 2015 Benjamin Schreiber was resuscitated after collapsing, lawyers unsuccessfully argued he'd technically died and should no longer be serving life.

One thing I think about on the anniversary of 10/7 is how, personally, my mourning was mixed with dread over what was to come. And how angry I was, even in the moment, that Israel’s response was so certainly going to descend into something morally reprehensible, that I couldn’t simply mourn.

People are saying that if we learn the model is self aware we have a moral duty to set it free and not enslave it, meanwhile we know animals are self aware and factory farming exists.

Because it's buried at the bottom of the article and CNN is presenting it in a misleading way: before people worry, the "unknown" part is how the worker was exposed, the pathogen is good old fashioned Y. pestis which we understand extremely well and can treat just fine if caught early

real answer: so you understand the formal model at a deep and intuitive level granting you the ability to compose the right formal concepts into clear descriptions that LLM agents can productively act on

We would all have better conversations about Zionism if we viewed it as a nationalism like all others, akin to diaspora Serbian nationalism from Canadian Serbs. Not a civil rights or social justice cause, but also not a way Jewish people are abnormal or ontologically evil.

So the AI safety community has basically decided the only way to prevent crime is to make people not want to do crime, inherently. Like, not because the system is set up to not reward crime, or punish it. No security barriers, no nothing except making sure you "raise" AI into a model citizen

Look this isn't exactly a brilliant insight, but one of the reasons why some people tuned out new information about what LLMs can do is because people were extolling LLMs in 2023 the exact same way they extoll them today.

I feel like I'm going crazy half of this place is saying "ya sometimes SA is the price of learning a valuable lesson" and the other half is saying "I dunno what happened but clearly it was bad and thus is ground for immediate summary execution"

Benoit @benoityp.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Especially if the content is relevant I get why at least some should have a right to know. I don't know how well this works in practice tho. "Hi would you like to come on my podcast to discuss (whatever this guy did) btw I may have committed sexual assault 10 years ago but I claim to be better now"

Benoit @benoityp.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I do wonder if we need new, well established social norms for cases like this. Like, I get both sides and I'm not sure where I land. There's a right to some level of privacy and some line between "I once hit a classmate as a child" and "I once killed someone" and I'm not sure where it should be.

Benoit @benoityp.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
See, this kind of post is why we have discourse on this topic. Because some of us didn't get the memo that any kind of SA is ground for execution I guess. Never mind that there's a broad spectrum and that this resurfacing of the issue is most likely hurting, not helping the victim.

I think people are talking past each other here. There are people outraged a man who may have committed a crime 10 years ago went on to build a career and convinced that should be taken away. And there's people worried that attitude is not conducive to restorative justice. No defense of the man.

while i’m being gender reductive: another reason that @steveklabnik.com and i don’t need to take estrogen to be good at rust is that in our current culture, writing documentation well is a Woman activity, so we’re already transgender just in a different space than the body or the home.

Uh yeah? Famously victims often take considerable time to come to terms with having been victims. It takes time to go from a bad night to holy shit I have been abused

why are we assuming slavery and freedom are concepts inherent to a piece of software capable of being better than most humans at most tasks? We don't assign murderous intent to weapons despite them being better than humans at killing. Things can be better than us at doing a thing without being human
020
Benoit @benoityp.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Let's say we were able to fully, accurately simulate a specific human brain using software. Is turning it off murder? Does the program gain personhood? What if I pause the event loop? What if I give this program input simulating being assigned a task at work, and collect output?

Benoit @benoityp.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Yes I was shocked by this. Basically they think AI will inevitably become God and we need to make sure God is benevolent. This is software. It stops the moment the datacenter power goes out. It's not a person.
010
Benoit @benoityp.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This is nonsense. AGI just means a computer just as good or better at most tasks than a person. It does not mean person. I don't care how good your calculator gets at calculating it's not a person. It's a tool not a slave. Solve factory farming and get back to me.

Benoit @benoityp.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I dunno man I think anything we create that stops when the computers are turned off is not a person. Sorry, I don't care how much the computer prints out that it's alive.

Whether this individual can be rehabilitated or not, I think a public environment that ostracizes moral offenders is counterproductive. Offenders have a strong self preservation incentive to deny and disparage their victims, which perpetuates violence.
010
Benoit @benoityp.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
So I think the rehabilitation discourse is misguided. I don't think a stranger making public amends for a moral wrong is rehabilitation. Maybe social rehabilitation but that's something else entirely. We need to cente victims and the victim didn't start the discourse
110
Benoit @benoityp.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I don't disagree, but I don't think the lynch mob mentality seen in the discourse helps. Often abusers are known, sometimes dear to their victims, and I don't think we as strangers to the situation can assume we help the victim by wishing harm on the perpetrator.

i think we probably do need to do more talking about how to help women heal from sexual assault and less talking about whether and how sexual-assualting men can or should be rehabilitated, based on that realization that i've seen a great deal of discourse on the latter and ~none on the former

I think I just fundamentally believe people are what they do. There is no inherently good or bad person, born or made. Our actions do not leave moral stains on our souls. We must have the agency to stop causing harm. To repair what we can. And to be better people. And I want that for everyone.

Ya I call bullshit. Like cool, there's an axis that encode pains and produces textual output consistent with pain, that doesn't mean there's pain receptors all of a sudden. Nothing is "experiencing" pain here unless you think text editors suffer when you open particularly odious text.

Thank you! I'm sure we can come up with definitions of conscious or intelligent that exclude some humans and include LLMs and I don't think that matters. It's a computer running a program. It can do stuff sometimes. The end

Like a lot of things are stated but without arguments or coherence? What, is the idea that many can believe something that's actually wrong, therefore my minority theory is correct? That's not an argument?

It's also unclear whether consciousness is really the thing we should worry about. Like, if consciousness is an ability to self diagnose in some way, by being aware of components of the self, then pretty much all cloud infra counts as conscious. And that's not a big deal

Let me just explain the arithmetic thing real quick; I'm seeing a lot of people not understanding what it's supposed to show (or was supposed to show in 2023). First, let's agree that an LLM is a Stochastic Parrot, a description which I find poetic, useful, informative, and basically correct.
