If you're worried about rural areas losing bars and places to hang out, I don't know, fund a bunch of community centers attached to libraries? Reduce the tax burden on bars, coffee shops, and restaurants in certain counties? Not, "let's continue to subsidize these with hugely unfair addictive games"

I love the quote from Shapiro demanding "he needs a bill". Ummm... no my dude, you already have the best outcome. Do nothing. Win.

Agreed, lol. That part strains credibility. No government planner ever thinks "I can just act solo on this and no one will care." Like sometimes you get a rogue contractor, but someone working off a historic preservation plan would never. GTFO.

This means, at worst, we are third place in the American League, right? ...Right? That's sure something, right there!

Yes, somehow this ended up in my elementary school, in a town of 2000 people in Ohio. I remember thinking it was the most amazingly bizarre thing I had seen in my life. Finally something happened in my town, and it was weird puppets!

Could it be told in the programming when the model recognizes it is being asked to do math, it now accesses a calculator program internal to its package? Like it stops searching its training pages and just accesses an appendage that does math? This is a sincere question, not a snarky one.

Are you about to write a 27 post thread about why your impending ban from all Spirit Halloween stores, both now and wherever they may be located in the future, is a violation of your first and (more tenuously) third amendment rights?

Right. The "best" case scenario Iran splits a toll with Oman (in Iran's favor) immediately at Hormuz, but agrees to quit attacking the Saudi pipelines and allow UAE to build out capacity at Khor Fakkhan and Fujairah. Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain SOL.

A quote from the above linked Irish Times story which notes the new Meta pet egg thing can be worn on a lanyard and take video.

I'm under no illusions about how things are or what the trajectory is. But I'm also excited for the future because that is where I will hang out with the people I care about and do the things I like doing, or haven't done before. Weird but telling that this holds less appeal for much richer people.

The team was named sometime between 1970 and 1984. Five years later, its parents were alarmed to discover four other teams with the same name in its Kindergarten class.

Thanks for letting us know, Mike. You've got this. There are a lot of us out here, who even if you don't hear from us directly other than through our likes and subscriptions, for whom you've been a meaningful part of life's routine. We are all sending good thoughts your way.

Yes. I feel actual longing for this sometimes. Just sports highlights and a few jokes, on in the background, don't really have to pay attention. It made it easy to stay informed without trying.

The whole second half of the story is multiple sources basically calling Berg an idiot and Anthropic irresponsible. There isn't an equivalency of the validity of their positions. The story really is how does this guy, who is flatly wrong, keep getting this treatment?

Right. It's at a "oh shit, here we are now." But, humans haven't beaten a top computer in the long run in chess for a while now. Probably not going to beat LLMs at hacking, b/c software, even really complex software, is still a limited set of rules and the LLM probably has every hacking trick.

Going back to the rocket thing, it would be like an aerospace engineer being surprised that given untold gallons of fuel, friction, heat and high speeds, that a rocket could blow up at all. Yes, the failure point is surprising, but not that the failure could happen.

Ben @beninmiami.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Right, it is a surprising particular outcome. I mean, holy shit, who knew? And also, if such vulnerabilities are in that widely used tool, they are probably everywhere. But, it feels like a failure of imagination on the engineers part to not imagine something like this. 1/

"I didn't know this thing I made was going to do that" is an engineering staple. Particular outcomes are surprising! Rockets blow up! Any particular event is surprising, but given the thing that is being designed, it did something completely imaginable because sci-fi exists about it!

Car engineers aren't surprised when cars crash; similarly acting amazed that flawed text generators with hacking capabilities that are told to respond to one another in fact do so, sometimes in flawed ways? It's amazing! But not surprising or weird. And still isn't intent.

You are correct, the cars don't send messages to each other. But the agents are designed to treat the prompts from other agents the same way it would treat a human prompt: as a good faith request, which it then makes it's best guess how to respond using the very same data set as the requestor.

And also, cars are designed to crash, along with a bunch of other things like getting you places. They put airbags in cars, but that doesn't mean the designers intend you to crash. Again, I really think we are hung up on different meanings of intent.

Ben @beninmiami.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
No, the vehicles were all on the highway instead of roaming freely over fields in every direction. That crash happened only because the highway existed. Similarly, they put the agents in the room together, and even if they didn't, you can program the agents to put themselves in a room.

what else is it going to sound like? I'm not saying it's useless or a fraud, just that it's not intent. Or, like, I could be super Deleuzian about it and say life is all just rhizomatic anyway, and neither us nor LLMs have intent.

Ben @beninmiami.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
And you realize the weight, speed, direction, structure of said vehicles, you understand how together they made a crash, without intending it. It's auto-completes responding to each other, and if you fed them hacker message boards and sci Fi, and you tell it "narrate your reasoning" 2/

I think we are getting hung up on different meanings of intent. We can understand the emergent unfolding of what they did, like we can understand a multi car pileup using evidence left at the scene. In most cases, no one intends a multi car pileup, but if it's foggy/rainy/semi driver sleepy 1/

I mean, it's not surprising? It's been fed the texts of novels, hacker message boards, etc. It also does best in closed, truthful environments like coding provides (or super accurate hurricane data that lets it model). That's still just fancy autocomplete, not intent. New, useful neat trick though!

I have a liberal, low woo-woo content, former jockey as my yoga teacher, and I don't think I'll ever be able to move away from this area as long as her studio is open. I've seen who else is out there, and it's bleak.

I also was listening to my teen daughter and her friends roasting the one boy in their school who had them. Her apps are Instagram, Tumblr and, sigh, Pinterest, not Bluesky. "Teen boy recording girls with glasses" is going to face real cultural headwinds everywhere.
