Stephen Merchant once deployed just such a ‘You’re absolutely right’ to Karl Pilkington in the RG podcast that my friends still use it regularly to this day

The Toll by Neal Shusterman I’ve really enjoyed this series. This is a great conclusion, which itself points to the over-simplicity of the way the world is set up in book 1. Some (clumsy albeit well meaning) non-binary rep! Hope but with realism! He’s a little too pleased with his own puns.
Cover of The Toll by Neal Shusterman, featuring two figures standing back to back, a male figure in a forest green robe, a female figure in an apple green robe speckled with emeralds, each holding a stylised scythe. The figures' profiles form the shape of the staffs of the scythe, with symmetrical profiles like the famous vase/face optical illusions. Between them a third figure stands in a purple robe, with a stole decorated with a waveform hanging round his neck, which forms the prongs of a large stylised tuning fork (annoyingly, in the book this garment is described as a scapular, not a stole, but the stole works so well with the imagery here that I think the author should have gone back and changed it to match the illustration)

“You can only work on one grave at a time” OK, but why? Also, the way the whole key system worked meant that all the keys had to open all the locks, making it an entirely pointless step

Tonight I’ve watched instalments from two different vampire franchises where a fast-talking new character refers to the protagonist, a vampire slayer, as ‘B’ and is later revealed to have been withholding secrets that may put the hero in jeopardy

Do I repost this literally every time I see an offence? Couldn’t possibly say. In totally unrelated news, Eleanor Rigby has very specific syllable counts and stresses to make it work

The Scythe novels by Neal Shusterman are set in a future where basically anything can be healed and death has been solved, so society has to find a new way for lives to end, professional ‘scythes’ who are the only people allowed to kill permanently

As autumn settles in this is your seasonal reminder to set aside a cold wet evening to watch this delight of a film. Ensure whisky is at hand, but perhaps don’t do a complete drink-along
Poster for the film Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018), featuring Melissa McCarthy as Lee Israel sitting writing at a desk cluttered with multiple vintage typewriters, a large whisky on the rocks and a black and white cat. All the tones are autumnal

The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin So many big ideas! Politics! Gender! Science! So much to chew on. Presents an incredibly nuanced and critical view of a world that might in lesser hands be merely presented as a utopia
Cover of The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin, featuring a washed-out yellow-tinted view of a low wall made of loose stones curving into the distance. The landscape is empty and barren, excepting a distant mountain. Flecks of foiled golden dust dot the air

Fearsome Fairies edited by @elizadearnley.bsky.social Always fun to read a book by someone I’ve shared a stage with! An enjoyable selection of tales, most too authored for my purposes as a storyteller, but many drawing on older folklore and tales that I intend to look into further for telling
Cover of Fearsome Fairies: Haunting Tales of the Fae, produced by the British Library, edited by Elizabeth Dearnley. A symmetrical green monochrome design on a yellow background, featuring images of a pair of eyes looking out from a tangle of foliage and thorns, two large hands plus two further gnarlier and subtler hands amongst the undergrowth.

In primary school we had to write a poem about our favourite book. I got in trouble for using the word ‘Titty’. All the teacher needed to do was open a single page of Swallows & Amazons

Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett My annual Pratchett; of course it’s good, it’s Pratchett. But this was great! Fairy tales & the power of stories! Couldn’t be more suited to my current interests! Some great stuff about power & authoritarianism, plus the most direct LOTR nods I recall in Discworld
Cover of Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett, featuring a cartoon image of three witches flying through a swamp, two of them in traditional black robes and pointed hat, one of those with a cat on her shoulder and smoking a pip, the third in a ball gown and clutching a magic wand. In the foreground are a frog and a snake. In the background a horse-drawn carriage with a beautiful blonde woman on board. There are parrots, though I’m not sure why as these don’t feature in the story.
