One of the best technical articles I’ve read in years. Stewart Brand’s classic book “How Buildings Learn” has shaped my attitude to the way systems change for most of my career, and this piece gives some great new things to ponder.

The food is mostly terrible, but it’s safe and accessible. If literally nothing else, their multilingual self service terminals make them incredibly useful for getting your calories in a foreign country. Relied on them a lot when I visited the Netherlands and Germany.

Bloomberg: "It’s now more expensive to hire a tanker from the US to China than to launch a rocket into space. That ocean journey runs about $80 million compared with $74 million for a standard commercial launch. The eye-watering prices are the result of a global tanker shortage that's getting worse"

In general, if you’re using LLMs to analyse LLM-generated work, just stop. Cut your nonsense requests for paperwork that encourages people to use LLMs to create it.

Connected Cars Are a Surveillance Platform
Researchers at Northeastern University, in collaboration with Consumer Reports, evaluated how much modern cars spy in their drivers: To determine this, CR dug through thousands of pages of automakers’ privacy policies and asked questions of 15 different automakersBMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Stellantis, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen. We also reviewed corporate, regulatory, and legal filings from data brokers operating in the "insurtech" industrythe technology companies and data brokers that help insurance companies set their rates.

How an abandoned water park became a lightning rod for the Canberra community
The state of the park, and several broken promises around its unrealised reopening, have caused frustration. And anyone still hoping the water park will feature in their summer plans will be left high and dry.

The other thing is, this movie was easily the most accessible Transformers animation for about a decade. You could rent it from most video stores, unlike the serials which occasionally got replayed on TV. So it had an outsized presence just for that.

If you are "writing a user story," you're already in trouble. A "user story" is exactly that, the user's story. They're the ones who "write" the story, not you. A user story is not a code word for a waterfall up-front specification. A "story" describes your user's work, not yours. 1/4

If your solution to system failures is "tell developers to be more careful," you don't have an engineering strategy. You have a wish. And wishes don't scale. As humans, we are fundamentally fallible. We make mistakes. 🧵 (1/6)

I understand that funding bodies want to go all in on AI as the shiny new innovation thing. But if all the grants start going to AI at the expense of everything else then the research sector is going to end up looking like a farm with dozens of threshers hacking away in a field with no wheat.

This is a damn impressive achievement, but it’s not enough. The business model for these colossuses requires reuse — rapid reuse — and this booster is a fair way off that. They’re aiming to repeat the space shuttle’s promise, but they might well be stuck with the space shuttle’s reality.
