The first UNC basketball game of the season is tonight, which means that Carolina basketball will be a big part of my personality for the foreseeable future. I only care about one sport, but I care about it SUPER HARD.

Imagine being in high school and having Rahul Kohli as your teacher. I would be so in love. Just like girls in Indiana Jones’s class level love.

I got a “presented by Chat GPT” commercial before Carrie episode 2 and now I’m mad.

Mike Flanagan, you son of a bitch, you’ve done it again. The first episode of Carrie is fantastic. Now I just have to stop myself from binging the whole thing.

In “The Erlenmeyer Flask,” another doctor explains DNA base pairs to Scully, WHO IS ALSO A DOCTOR. And I’m sure they did that for the audience’s benefit, but surely the average X-Files watcher paid attention in biology class? Even a little?

Ballpoint pen and colored pencil.

At the top of the piece we see the delicately drawn branches and leaves of an apple tree. Just beneath the tree limbs, a bat is flying with one of the green apples in its mouth. This is when the morphing begins, reader. A sequence of 13 drawings show the bat morphing into a teeny witch (with completion of the morph around drawing #9). The morphing creates a spiral leading us to the center of the page where the little witch is running towards her basket filled with apples. It’s likely she’ll re-morph into a bat again and the morphing pattern will continue.

Mulder: I bet Eugene Victor Tooms flattened himself out and went right through that air duct. Scully: I don’t think there’s anything in the laws of nature to support that.. Mulder: Eugene Victor Tooms does not abide by the laws of nature, all right? You don’t know shit about Eugene Victor Tooms.

I was always a fighting game girl, but I’m sure I’d appreciate it from a storytelling standpoint. Either way, I’m here for another Cregger movie.

Gen Z would lose their minds over Scully’s “Darkness Falls” parka, yes or no?

A still from X-Files episode “Darkness Falls.” From left to right we have a forest ranger, Scully and Mulder. Everything is very neutral except for Scully’s delightfully colorful 90s parka.

I think it could get cult classic status. The people who have seen it love it, and the people love Mike Flanagan.

Yeah, I guess you can’t really market that it’s somehow a sequel to the movie but also an adaptation of King’s novels. I feel like only folks in the know saw it??? But at least everyone who has seen it loves it.

Pen and watercolor

A pack of witches dance around a fire circle summoning a massive demon in the flames. One of our witches is down though, reader. She lets her sisters know that she won’t be continuing the circle. “Gotta sit this one out, sisters,” she says. “Rolled my ankle.”

I played around with adding a lot of detail to this scene (more shadows, trees in the background, etc.) I think the simpler version works but I’m not sure how I feel about the fire demon drawing. I think I like it. Was having trouble getting the composition of the scene set up with a text bubble in the bottom right. I do like the purple against the black dresses and little boots.

I’m kind of ambivalent on the novel. It’s fine! But Flanagan is the King whisperer. I’m kind of convinced that he could adapt any King material and make it great.

Rewatching Doctor Sleep right after I rewatched The Shining really hammers home what a miracle Mike Flanagan pulled off with this movie. Shine on, Mike Flanagan. May you get to do whatever you want forever.

Currently rewatching The Shining, and I fully understand all of King’s criticisms, but also Wendy still gets shit done. She’s screaming and crying but she’s going to survive. I relate.

I really love the new Leon Bridges album. I even love the cover art, because he’s dressed like a cool Gilligan who fucks.

The cover for Leon Bridges’s album Happiness Anytime. He’s standing in a small boat, wearing a red track jacket, white wide leg pants and a cool hat. He looks cool as hell but also kind of like Gilligan.

“Margaritaville” is woke if you think about it. Like people are trying to blame some mystery woman for the narrator’s problems and he’s all, “Nah, this is on me.” Jimmy Buffett was an introspective ally.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”
