Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 10hThere's endangered in Iceland, and then there's endangered in the Blaskets FWIW smoked puffin tastes rather like smoked salmon: remarkably fishy 010
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 16hThat's a good point. I'd expect a pseudonym to be one that's a name current to the generation of the writer, but that's not a hard rule 010
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 17hI strongly suspect I know people who know her. I mildly suspect I know her without knowing I know her She's probably a generation older than the naming that started this thread though 110
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 20hI think that's actually a pen name. I'm pretty sure I've been at an event which she also attended, and that name wasn't on the attendees list Ofc she may have attended under a pseudonym 110
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Hoorah for you being home. That squeezing along the platform on arriving at GdN is not my favourite part though 010

Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Given the news about the Yorkshire tiger incident ... Yeah 160

Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 09/10/2026My ex used to cut holes in that fence to get in, back in the day 000
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026The amusing thing is that the direct Lumo train via Edinburgh Waverley takes longer than the alternative that changes there, because the direct sits at the platform at Waverley for 17 minutes. You can get a train over to Glasgow between the Lumo arriving and it departing again 010
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Ah, of course there isn't. That would all be too easy 100
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Ooh. Is that going to change routing to Bulgaria then? 100
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026We tried booking it a little while back, and weren't able to at the time, but if you're booked in that's presumably no longer the case Herself is about to check 220
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Yes. And Latin's lack is because to actually split an infinitive would require pulling a single word apart. Imbloodypractical 010
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026I'm guessing that you're in the Premier Inn looking across the bridge at the Crown Plaza. That's where we go anyway 110
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 07/10/2026The point is to know before you develop the symptoms and before you become infectious, so that you can keep out of people's way 120
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Looks like Bury is the closest option for us 110
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 07/10/2026You can report on it to us at Eastercon (more private than on here). 020
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Meanwhile, we're fascinated at the idea of meeting K2. It'll be interesting to see how much they're like K1, and the differences 000
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Yes - that con in Glasgow always presented as one for the pros. I think that's why C felt uncomfortable the one time that she attended as a mere fan, some decades back. I hope that that attitude was temporary, but she's never felt the temptation to invest in finding out 220
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 07/10/2026We're not long home from Octocon in Cork, and I suspect there'll be a few that will have been at both that and this, including the Czajkowskis. Lally, of course, and Alan & David promoting next Eastercon. We're already doing two cons this month, the second being Bristolcon, so no Glasgow for us 120
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Actual poaching wants a temperature of below 180°F. 210°F is basically at the highest end of simmering, more of a boil (And that's ignoring the unit confusion you had) 010
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026So basically yet another variant! I'd have called that baked eggs, were that term not already seemingly used for cases with multiple eggs per pan 000
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I presume you meant 'poaching' rather than 'launching'. But what you're showing is coddled eggs And now I'm suggesting where to get silicone egg coddlers, because they look much less likely to stick than the ramekins I use 310
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Yeah. American eggs have had the protective layer removed from the shell, so they need to be kept in the fridge. If that's how you were brought up, then that's how you'll want to stay In general, if something is refrigerated in the shop, you should refrigerate it at home 010
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026The advice that has worked best for me is to use the eggs chilled from the fridge. It does mean I have to put them in there in the first place, which is advised against on this side of the pond, but I'll leave them in there no longer than overnight 100
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026This. Other methods of cooking eggs whole are perfectly valid, but different 010
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Or at least appropriately chaotic. I'm thinking this might be a RL Call of Cthulhu sanity trap 040
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 06/10/2026FWIW I recall that my godfather stood in Haywards Heath as a Liberal candidate, sometime back at the start of the 70s. He was from Budapest, the Pest side to be more precise 030
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026You know, we got home from Barca in a day - Sants to Paris on the TGV, followed by the E*. Quite how you ended up getting stuck in Nimes I can't comprehend (Says he who came home from Prague via Sicily this summer) 100
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I expect an imminent update of the Michael Crick biography of him, now Crick doesn't have to worry about the libel laws 000
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Farewell Corcaigh. Doors closing, so going dark 000
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Congratulations. Though commiserations on another couple of years more of exhaustion 040
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026We have in the past attended some conventions with no intention of going to any programme. After all, conventions are about coming together It's less convenient when the people you want to see are in programme items though 040
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026And it was lovely to catch up with everyone, Ted and Indy included 020
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Anyway, have a good trip home. I presume that will be today We're currently at the airport, which is better for not having the ongoing work it had this time last year 110
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026And all they had to do was get you to decamp to Dublin? 😁 200
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026This whole end of the island, I guess, judging by the buildings down here 110
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I hope you enjoyed your meal. It's the 3rd time we've been there (1st being with Diane last year, the 2nd 2 nights ago), and we've enjoyed every meal there. It's also very convenient for the hotels Given it apparently opened in 2007, I wonder if you ever visited it when you were here 110
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Back then, tattoos were so uncommon that, yes, even tattooists were less inked. More inked than their clients, perhaps, but that was a low bar much of the time 010
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Oh dear, blocked. And everyone - the one - who followed them 180
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I'm worried that Fluffy Cthulhu will think that his dinner is being nicked 120
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 04/10/2026... visited Market Lane, and the food was, as always, good Getting a goodbye hug was a bonus 140
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 04/10/2026That lovely thing of leaving a restaurant as @cemurphy.bsky.social (as part of a group) comes in. I had earlier asked, this being Cork where she and Ted used to live, for recommendations, but the answer came back that they'd moved away too long ago Well, it was the second time this weekend we'd ... 160
Alan Bellingham @bellinghman.bsky.social · 04/10/2026David and Alan are somewhere around ... Oh yeah, they're at that table part way across the bar from here ... And now at our table. 000
