a lot of us out here putting in a tonne of effort to teach folks useful shit with just wildly diminished pay-off for the effort, even compared to a few years back. i think there's a bunch of reasons for this, most of which makes me incredibly grateful for folks who do invest in learning new shit.

for some reason wordpress decided not to make the chart the featured image, so here it is
A line chart showing sporadic peaks, but healthy sales with a sudden drop-off to an almost flat-line situation. The drop-off is labelled 2026

WCAG is a great example of the the failure of the W3C's (& TBL's & in many way's Ted Nelson's) one web principle/dream/goal. WCAG is biased in favour of English. Other Latin scripts and languages benefit from that bias but other writing systems are disadvantaged.

on the anthropic IPO stuff, I think this via @garbageday.email is pretty much spot on www.garbageday.email/p/they-want-...
But I’ll end this here with a little conspiracy theory courtesy of Hacker News that I have decided I will believe until I see proof to the contrary. “OpenAI and Anthropic are publicly asking for slowdown in AI research,” one user wrote. “Translation: We see this technology not being any more useful than what it is now, no AGI is coming, and the first one to accept this and slow down the dollar burn rate will incur the wrath of the market. So let's say this big boogeyman technology will end all life on earth and we all slow down together.”

John Healey will, according to reports, head into the Budget with a £4bn to £6.5bn chunk of his fiscal headroom having mysteriously gone walkabouts. The cause? A sharp drop in immigration to the UK. Almost as though migrants aren’t all just wandering around devouring taxes for shits and giggles.

Net Migration if Falling - now the Treasury needs to Pay the Bill for it.
After years of promising that fewer migrants would relieve pressure on Britain, Labour is discovering that cutting migration also means cutting workers, taxpayers and economic headroom.

Ever double-tapped a button on your phone and had the page zoom in? In this post over on @piccalil.li, @bell.bz looks at a simple CSS one-liner of `touch-action: manipulation` to prevent that, rather than messing with the viewport meta. piccalil.li/blog/stop-bu...
piccalil.li
Stop buttons triggering zoom when they’re double tapped
It’s annoying when your browser zooms if a button is rapidly tapped. There’s actually a really simple fix and no, you don’t have to prevent all zooming with a meta tag!

"Stop buttons triggering zoom when they’re double tapped" by @piccalil.li Great post. Describes the problem I didn't even know I have, but also comes with a one-liner solution. I also didn't know about this property/value is in the CSS. As always top content! piccalil.li/blog/stop-bu... #css

The idea of a "tech industry" has always relied on "computer" being a special kind of medium, akin to alchemy. And if tech demands to be king, AI hype has now elevated LLMs to a king of kings. But the solipsism has hit a dead end. The only way forward is to recognize that computers are not special.
productpicnic.beehiiv.com
LLMs are just normal technology. But tech is just a normal medium.
The more we focus on a particular technology, the more we lose sight of what normal people actually care about.

I genuinely don’t think there’s a route back this time. Not to mention the seething hatred people outside of tech feel about the industry.

The trouble with having printed stickers is forever knowing that you can be the change that you wish to see on the back of street signs.
"The people destroying the web have names and addresses" set in in a retro-digital monospaced font (from Metroid II), white on black, with a one pseudo-pixel offset light grey shadow. At the bottom in small monospaced type is "multipa.ge"
