LMs that "know more" about toxicity are less toxic! Our #TACL 📄 connects behavior and internals: 💠 LMs amplify toxicity beyond humans 💠 Information about toxicity peaks in lower layers 💠 Bypassing these layers increases toxicity More details👇 #NLProc #interpretability (1/🧵)

In our new tutorial, @meanwhileina.bsky.social and I walk you through meaningful hypothesis testing using a less known form of calculating Bayes Factor. osf.io/preprints/ps... People transitioning to Bayes often wonder how to decide if an effect is meaningful or not. Here you go... 1/🧵

Current LLMs are exactly 0 useful for tweaking style in PDFs generated with LaTeX from quarto documents. It's niche, admittedly, but a great area showing severe limits close to complete breakdown of capabilities. Not possible to entertain illusion of "understanding" here. Full hallucination mode.

Getting nervous for the talk I'm about to give at a workshop about "using AI to drive impact" which features slides such as these.
Slide is titled: You don't need to use LLMs.

Science is a process of collaborative meaning making, by which we try to understand the world

Even if AI were perfect, we rely on it at our peril — it is not science if we (i.e., humanity as a whole) do not understand and cannot recapitulate all parts of it

I very, very rarely use LLMs myself. You can give yourself permission not to. Don’t FOMO yourself into itConclusion: Don't rely on something you don't understand and can't control

If you must use LLMS:

1. Treat them like you would an intern: only use them for things you can easily and thoroughly check

2. Make your process as robust as possible

3. Be aware of your own (human) cognitive biases

Excited to share a new preprint w/ @michael-lepori.bsky.social & Michael Franke! A dominant approach in AI/cogsci uses *outputs* from AI models (eg logprobs) to predict human behavior. But how does model *processing* (across layers in a forward pass) relate to human real-time processing? 👇 (1/12)
Screenshot of Figure 1, which has two panels labeled (a) and (b). The caption states the following. Figure 1: Overview of our study. (a) Experiment 1: We explore whether forward passes show mechanistic signatures of competitor interference, first preferring a salient competing intuitive answer before preferring the correct answer. (b) Experiment 2: We systematically investigate the ability of dynamic measures derived from forward passes to predict indicators of processing load in humans.
