My new book is finally out! A short, readable overall history of beer tracing the long lines in the development of beer. Seeing history like that inevitably brings out an overlooked side of the history of beer: beer as a source of massive power. Please repost! www.garshol.priv.no/download/pow...

1975, a fantastic lesson into why you don't trace with the big brush.
Munich's 1975 Oktoberfest poster. Shows a close-up of a woman in a dirndl, which cuts her image off at the forehead and waist, holding up several stone Masskrugs of beer. Image is painted with large brush strokes. "Oktoberfest" is written over the top, almost so that the middle "o" and "b" go over her eyes like glasses. Across her waist, as if it were a garish belt, is a large red heart.

1990!
Munich's 1990 Oktoberfest poster. Shows a carousel horse in a stylized manner. Most of the bottom of the poster is a green semicircle with the post of the horse rising out of it. "Oktoberfest München 1990" is written around its edge. Above the horse is an inverted semicircle that's blue and white checked (the Bavarian flag pattern). The horse itself is made up of various smaller images of Oktoberfest iconic objects, the beer, roller coasters, fun slides, horn instruments, pretzels, radishes, chickens, and carnival slides.

1979. I assume Zeppelin was playing when the artist dreamed this up.
Munich's Oktoberfest poster for 1979. Shows a sketched Bavarian man in traditional suspenders, checked, shirt, and green jacket/hat. No lederhosen, though, because this Bavarian man is actually a centaur, rearing up on its hind legs while he takes a draft from a stone Masskrug. He has a beautiful brown coat, though. I wonder what shampoo he uses.

1977, aka Bavarian Gothic.
Munich's Oktoberfest poster for 1977, a close up painting of a man and woman in Bavarian dress. The man has his arm around the woman's shoulder and both are smiling. She is holding a basket filled with radishes, a chicken, and a shooting target with a checked blue/white cloth (the colors of Bavaria's flag). He is holding a large glass of beer. There's a large red heart between them.

1995, smack dab in the MS Paint Chic era of Oktoberfest posters.
Munich's Oktoberfest poster for 1995. Shows a roughly shaped animated woman holding two outsized beer glasses at arm's length, running. Sh's wearing a green and red dirndl against a blue background. The lines are rough (crude?) enough that I compare it to MS Paint.

1973!
Munich's 1973 Oktoberfest poster. Animated image of a cloudy blue sky over carnival rides at the fest, as well as some slope-roofed buildings (presumably festzelts) and the Frauenkirche in the background. Dominating the upper part of the poster is a giant pink balloon. "Oktoberfest in München" is printed in white over the balloon.

1962! Love the art style but too much of a philistine to know how to describe it.
Munich's 1962 Oktoberfest poster. Depicts the Münchner Kindl with a smile, holding an armful of Oktoberfest symbolic objects: two stone Masskrugs, radishes, a pretzel, roast chicken, herring on a stick, and a paper rifle target. All the makings of a great and fishy day.

1974! Inflation hadn't hit quite so hard yet. You could still get a lot of heart for your DM.
Munich's 1974 Oktoberfest poster. Shows a man wearing lederhosen with red vest and green jacket, sitting on a horse. In one hand is a stone Masskrug, in the other is a giant red heart. The horse has flowers on its head, but not in the form of like a laurel but rather vertical stems and blooms, as if it were planted in the horse's mane. The art style looks like acrylic paint with broad brush strokes, very cartoony.

Who's to say she's not balancing the Frauenkirche on the tops of her wrists?
Munich's Oktoberfest poster 2025. White background with sky blue square in top center with bordering like a postage stamp. Shows animated woman in a dirndl holding up a tray with the Frauenkirche, a beer glass, pretzel, and baritone horn on it. She must be very strong.

Taking a new profile pic from this 1969 poster for the Wien Stadthalle's Oktoberfest celebration. Herr Bunker's beer glass is a stunning rebuke to gravity.
Poster ad for the Oktoberfest at Vienna's Stadthalle, from 1969. Red background with the event named at the top in white block type letters. Below is a man in a white shirt, Austrian folk hat, and lederhosen suspenders holding up a full beer glass in one hand, and a whole fried chicken in the other.

Well, the poster in 2009 had that vibe too, but in a kind of derivative way.
Munich's official Oktoberfest poster for 2009. Navy blue background with word strings in various neon colors forming a swirly pretzel. The words are typically Munich, München, and Oktoberfest, but "Monaco" is also featured prominently for some reason. It's not clear whether the word strings are meant to evoke a roller coaster as well, or just the pretzel.

Here's that 2005 poster design. I think it's quite clever, though the artist (Jochen Steglich) clearly never played Roller Coaster Tycoon. Or worse...he did 😈
Munich's official Oktoberfest poster for 2005. Navy blue background with multicolored lines entering from left, making two loop-de-loops like a roller coaster, then existing right. The lines form a pretzel, giving the feel of a long-exposure photo capturing many runs of the roller coaster. An intentionally crudely drawn coaster train with happy stick figure riders is ascending the first loop. Above is printed "Oktoberfest München 17.9 - 3.10.2005"

Sorry, I forgot. Here it is with alt text added.
2026 official poster design for Munich's Oktoberfest. The image is a highly colorful mosaic of polygons in different colors, almost like a stained glass window. The shapes form into several objects, most prominently a Mass glass of beer, a Ferris wheel, and the two towers of Munich's Frauenkirche. In the lower right and left corners are a baritone horn and pretzel, and above the pretzel is a heart. In the lower center is "Oktoberfest München 19.9 - 4.10.2026"

Oktoberfest kicks off in Munich today, and reminded me that still hadn't looked up the 2026 poster design! Instant favorite. For me it evokes the dazzling, sense-inflaming, nighttime carnival glow of the event. A vibe not broached since 2005 (yes I checked, shut up). Artist: Florian Huber

Magazine ad showing image of North and South America on a relief globe (meaning, the globe has bumps and textures to reflect the geography of the continent). Across the center is a red banner with "Schlitz" on it. The globe imagery was common in Schlitz advertising since the 1890s at least.

Bottom center is a parallelogram cutout with a photo of a burly man drinking a can of Schlitz. His chin is large enough to be a third continent. Tagline is "Taste the Gusto life."

Had this ad a while, but I just now noticed that this Metzger Bräu ad features a Hackerbräu stein? Apparently Metzger Bräu was was a hotel/restaurant. I didn't realize!
poster ad with black background, showing a crowd of well dressed (in 1912 fashion). They're gathered around a giant sized beer stein (taller than any of the people) from Munich's Hackerbräu brewery. One of the men seems to be presenting the stein to the crowd. Another well-dressed man is looking on with binoculars, though he's within 2 feet of both the crowd and stein.

Top of poster reads "Metzger Bräu" in huge yellow letters. Below is written "Zurich's besuchteste Münchner Bierhalle" or "Zurich's most visited Munich-style beer hall"

Funny you should say that, since this ad coincided with German efforts to reform social and labor systems in its African colonies by taking inspiration from Jim Crow in the U.S. Not saying Löwenbräu had a direct hand in the policy, but they wet their beak in the colonialism. Hacker-Pschorr, too!
