My new book is finally out! A short, readable overall history of beer tracing the long lines in the development of beer. Seeing history like that inevitably brings out an overlooked side of the history of beer: beer as a source of massive power. Please repost! www.garshol.priv.no/download/pow...

Oktoberfest started today in Munich, so here are my #beerhistory blog posts about its history: 1. the scandal of the first giant Oktoberfest tent: how a restaurateur from outside Munich ignored the authorities and established what is Oktoberfest nowadays. dafteejit.com/2026/03/the-...

Taking a new profile pic from this 1969 poster for the Wien Stadthalle's Oktoberfest celebration. Herr Bunker's beer glass is a stunning rebuke to gravity.
Poster ad for the Oktoberfest at Vienna's Stadthalle, from 1969. Red background with the event named at the top in white block type letters. Below is a man in a white shirt, Austrian folk hat, and lederhosen suspenders holding up a full beer glass in one hand, and a whole fried chicken in the other.

Oktoberfest kicks off in Munich today, and reminded me that still hadn't looked up the 2026 poster design! Instant favorite. For me it evokes the dazzling, sense-inflaming, nighttime carnival glow of the event. A vibe not broached since 2005 (yes I checked, shut up). Artist: Florian Huber

Budweiser Discovery Reserve (2019-2019): A red ale brewed with Voyager barley grains, it featured notes of toffee, a subtle hoppiness, and a sharp finish. It was made using an archival recipe from the late 60's, and released to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing

Magazine ad showing image of North and South America on a relief globe (meaning, the globe has bumps and textures to reflect the geography of the continent). Across the center is a red banner with "Schlitz" on it. The globe imagery was common in Schlitz advertising since the 1890s at least.

Bottom center is a parallelogram cutout with a photo of a burly man drinking a can of Schlitz. His chin is large enough to be a third continent. Tagline is "Taste the Gusto life."

poster ad with black background, showing a crowd of well dressed (in 1912 fashion). They're gathered around a giant sized beer stein (taller than any of the people) from Munich's Hackerbräu brewery. One of the men seems to be presenting the stein to the crowd. Another well-dressed man is looking on with binoculars, though he's within 2 feet of both the crowd and stein.

Top of poster reads "Metzger Bräu" in huge yellow letters. Below is written "Zurich's besuchteste Münchner Bierhalle" or "Zurich's most visited Munich-style beer hall"

It's 10:00 PM on the empty ski slope. You've twisted your ankle and watched the sun go down in despair. It's getting colder by the second. At last, a devoted St. Bernard finds you in the snow. He hands you a Michelob Light for some reason. "Surprise," he scowls, popping one open for himself.
1981 Budweiser magazine ad, featuring Monique St. Pierre (a former Playboy Playmate) in a red sweater and ski suit (minus the jacket), kneeling next to a sitting St. Bernard dog with a six pack of Michelob Light around his neck where the legendary wooden barrel usually is. Behind them in a wooden wall (like for a ski lodge) and a pair of stored skis. A sign on the wall reads "Michelob Light Snow Patrol Headquarters."

Tagline: "The Michelob Light Snow Patrol to the rescue!

A postcard showing a tapster pouring Maß of Märzenbier at Oktoberfest under the strict observation of two police officers, each of them with a sabre.

The postcard says "Greetings from Oktoberfest.

Here, friend you get a full Maß,
From a well-guarded cask." (it rhymes in German)

The tapster looks slightly nervous.

From Germany, Aug 1962: Digestif ad from Underberg «Carefree travels» [ENGinALT]
An advertisement for an after-dinner digestif. It features an elegant blonde woman sitting in front of a window, alongside the product, a glass, and a package. The ad promotes the product as a means to travel carefree and feel good.
«Carefree travels

Address to Mrs. Fratscher, Ostseebad Graal in Meckl. Haus Daheim I. Treppe!" She said immediately, the gloves come from the wool collection, and pointed the defendant, who was shocked, that it would be more correct and better if he delivered the gloves immediately again, as there could otherwise be bad consequences, because there would be severe penalties for it. The defendant replied that he would also do so. Obviously, according to the impression of the witness Bredefeldt, he regretted the purchase.

The next morning, the defendant continued his usual journey with his bread cart. He had put on the gloves. When he came to the farmer Eggert after Groß-Schwass, his mother asked him how he had come to the beautiful gloves. The defendant told her that he had bought them the day before from a soldier, in the gloves there was a note, from which it emerged that they came from the wool collection. How the witness Eggert learned from his mother, has then said to the defendant, how he could do such a thing.

Even now and on the following days, the defendant did not deliver the gloves. After he was not on the road on Sunday and Monday, d. 11 and 12. 1. 1942, he used the gloves on his trips on Tuesday and Wednesday again. When he drove through Buchbinderstrasse in Rostock on Wednesday, d. 14. 1. 1942, he was called by the gunner Stahl. The defendant told him that there was a note in the gloves, from which it emerged that they were from the wool collection, whether he was not ashamed at all. Stahl replied to him that it was not so bad, he could wear them calmly.

Then came to the cigar dealer Rosian to deliver bread there. He told him what bad luck he had, he had bought a pair of gloves from a soldier on the Chaussee near...

Placing the glass against the pocket really helped this ad resonate with target demos...except in Brooklyn. Michelob, 1970.
Print ad showing bottles of michelob arranged in a triangle pattern mimicking bowling pins, sitting on a wooden bowling-lane like surface. A full glass of Michelob beer is set before the pins, placed against the 1-3 pocket...a bowling term referring to the space between the first and second row of pins (on the right side in the bowler's view) that is the typical target for right handed bowlers. A shot that hits the opposite side 1-2 pocket (again, for right handed bowlers) is referred to as the "Brooklyn" side, because historically bowlers in Brooklyn preferred aiming for that.

Tagline says "Bowl 'em over." and "Surprise people...serve Michelob."
