A scientist gets called to a mountain for a secret mission. It takes too long to start up but gets better, esp when metaphysical questions arise. Pulpy vibes of ‘Invention of Morel’. I’ve wanted to read Buzzati for a while. The prose was disappointing but maybe something got lost in translation 6/10

It’s like a catalog or maybe an encyclopedia of human emotions & how human feelings happen. There’s too much God stuff. I want a version of this where not everything is chalked up to the power and glory of God 5.6/10

I read "The Dalkey Archive." 2 friends meet a guy who brings them to an underground lair. One meets an author & has love troubles. A lot of the traits I’ve loved in his other books are here: bikes, drinking. Off-the-wall stuff treated like normal & then banished w/ a hand wave- unpredictable! 8.4/10

It's a meditation on relationships, the color blue, & quotes about living from Emerson. Comments on Gass's "On Blue," Stein's "Tender Buttons," coitus, & the quest to write & secure funding for this book. It's all contained in 200 very short chapters. It was good 7.9/10

It's about a guy in his twenties & his roommate. They eat oranges, return movies, & feel bad. The things that come back, like the marquees around the guy's "headhole", were interesting. Zachary German & Melville House vibes - makes me want to explore more on Lazy Fascist Press (RIP) 8.1/10

It claims to want to honor diversity through story structure - that use of the D word is interesting. Talks about the four act structure, nested structures, etc. It was useful to think outside of the Freytag box 8/10

It continues the story of Lucien from Two Poets. He moves to Paris. There’s people who wear disguises & pretend to be from other races. The deaths surprised me. I got lost who was deceiving whom. The digressions about prisons I liked less than the digressions about bread from Two Poets 5.7/10

It’s a deep dive into poetry by Larkin & Shakespeare & an excavation into poem stanzas. I thought it'd be about the layout of words in a sentence in fiction. I'm a bit inspired to read more poetry but ultimately disappointed that this failed to touch on prose like other books in this series 4/10

It’s about fiction & pessimism. It argues that humans should go extinct. Might be the greatest deadpan bonkers essay ever. I disagreed w/ it but the show was too good. It studies death in horror fiction, death in life, pessimism in philosophy. I ❤️Ligotti’s fiction. This boosted his work for me 10/10

3 families intertwine starting w/ a car breakdown. Felt like too many characters even though there were only like 6. I didn’t expect it to end abruptly (blame the ebook). Some major events never dovetail. Yates is a relationship & feeling master. Gives you a tiny misogynistic hangover tho 8/10

A young queer woman in the WW1 era grows up, loses people she cares about to death & sometimes they ostracize her. She moves to Paris. I found this via the McCarthy song. It's too long: every feeling is described, melodramatically so. But its social value is crucial 6.3/10

A gentleman has an affair w/ a lady who shows up at the town where he’s getting engaged. It’s set in the Victorian era but uses words like computer, & comments on the story that’s happening. I loved The Magus. Characters make cool decisions. The hard-to-read confrontation scenes are great 8.4/10

A pizza chef's friend robs people. Something goes wrong with a robbery. It’s a clumsy, sloppy book. Feels like a Nancy cartoon where people are neither grotesques nor real. But it’s a page turner. Published in the ‘70s but feels more like the ‘50s - characters gripe about potsmoking longhairs 6.1/10

It’s an audit of family structure & reproductive labor, claiming to be along Marx & Engels’s historical materialist line. I disagreed w/ a lot. Classic 2nd wave feminism where it seldom throws trans folks a bone. 1st leftist book I’ve read to analyze a kibbutz. It’s entertaining & bonkers 8/10

As the preface told me, it’s Wright’s first book. My edition was 5 stories. Each 1 boasted a severe drama. Characters face and often receive death. High stakes. Many “oh, shit!” moments. I’d be lying if I said I didn't feel some kinship with my 1st book of 5 stories, due out soon lol 10/10

Amazon Whole Foods' push to overturn union election results at a Philly store have been denied, allowing the certification of the results, where workers voted to unionize despite Amazon's anti-union campaign
NLRB Denies Amazon Whole Foods Request to Overturn Historic Philadelphia Union Election

Philadelphia, PA — The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has denied Amazon Whole Foods’ request for review of the Regional Director’s decision certifying the January 27, 2025 union election at the company’s Center City Philadelphia store.

In May 2026, the NLRB Regional Director certified the results of the historic union election. Amazon Whole Foods subsequently filed a request for review with the Board in an effort to overturn the certification decision. Today, the NLRB denied the company’s request for review, allowing the certification to stand.

The Board’s refusal to review the Regional Director’s decision confirms what workers and UFCW Local 1776 have known from the beginning: the election was free, fair, and conducted lawfully.

“From the start, Whole Foods told their workers and the public that they would respect the outcome of the vote,” said Wendell Young IV, UFCW 1776 President. “Instead, the company has spent months delaying the process and retaliating against known union supporters. With this ruling, there could not be a clearer obligation to bargain. Enough is enough. It is time for Amazon Whole Foods to do the right thing, respect the workers’ decision, and come to the bargaining table.”

It’s an upstairs-downstairs novel about a grotesque dad & his family. Like the other novel of hers I love, it’s all dialogue, which made me work more. A sex worker relates copulation to language & acts in a bawdy version of Gogol’s “Nose”. There were ~10 different fonts + as many ways to read it. Dated regarding gender & women's bodies. I thought, “What’s the use of this beautiful sentence if it doesn't relate to a big picture?" 7.2/10
