I don't know what happened, but I guess I'm an #Orktober guy now? The dangers of rummaging in your old boxes I suppose. Suddenly you find yourself starting a small Blood Axe force. #nerdlings
A bunch of Rogue Trader era space orks in a basecoated but not painted state. Specifically models from the Space Ork Raiders box, with a couple of additional oddboys, heavy weapons and a dreadnought. Oh, and an old inquisitor model that I'm thinking about using as the Warboss's human advisor.Photo of the original three Ork books from the Rogue Trader era. Waaargh Orks, 'Ere We Go and Freebooterz.
Pulled these from the shelf and started reading. Great fun!

Me and a buddy split a box of (60!) Victrix vikings, and some archers, to use with some different historical game systems. Here's the first batch of painted beardies. This should be enough for most skirmish games. Looking at Svarta Korpen, Dux Brittanniarum, Pillage, Ravenfeast etc. #nerdlings
About 20 vikings, on a grass table mat with some trees and a road. Two rough groups of warriors, and four archers.

The leader has a raven banner behind him.Closer shot of one of the groups, showing the more heavily armed raiders, the chieftan and a berserker.Shot of the second group, with some spear wielding vikings.

Eldritch eh? Hmm... Yardu, The Terror With a Thousand Legs, and Nosferatu from MYTH. And to round it out, a giant Stoorworm from Infinity: TAG Raid. #Nerdlings #FindFolkFriday
The undead giant Yardu, from the board game MYTH. A large warrior skeleton, missing his lower jaw. Sculpted in a slightly cartoony style, and painted to match.A bunch of crawlers, from the board game MYTH. Arthropods(ish) of different sizes. With the Terror With a Thousand Legs - looking somewhat like a mix of a catterpillar and a spider - watching over its minions, as well as her giant spider lieutenant.

Sculpted in a slightly cartoony style, and painted to match. Most are brown or khaki, with black gleaming eyes, bright green poison sacks, and teal claws on the scorpions...Nosferatu, from the board game MYTH. Together with a bunch of his smaller skeleton minions.

A vampire inspired by the classic Nosferatu film, sculpted in a slightly cartoony, almost chibi, style. WIth small and short legs and oversized torso and head. Clothed in black except his bright red cape.A gigantic scaly worm-like creature with a large gaping maw, rowed with sharp teeth. It's coiled around a rock outcropping and has apparently crawled out of the ground near a mining facility.

Painted in a green tinged khaki with a flesh red mouth.

From Corvus Belli's Infinity: TAG Raid.

I do think my original method looks slightly better, but it also takes four times as long. Hmm...
Lance of mechs - Locust, Battlemaster, Commando and Wolverine. Again with distressed khaki colour scheme, but these were painted entirely with acrylics which requires more time and attention to "manually" get the shades and hilights right (compared to using enamel wash).

Started experimenting with alternate ways to achieve the khaki colour scheme I use for innies. Khaki basecoat, grey weapons/details, light drybrush > weathering > gloss coat > enamel+burnt umber pigment mix > remove enamel > details+basing > dull coat > cockpit > done! #battletech #nerdlings

I seem to remember someone having run (or planned to?) Jovian Chronicles using Tachyon Squadron. Now pondering doing the same thing myself, so curious if there's some JC>TS conversion work that's already been done. Could it have been @rivetgeek.aggregatecognizance.com maybe?

Let's do one more... After having been off GW for a long time, Warcry and Blackstone Fortress pulled me back in, followed by Underworlds. Two great game designs, and one... with really cool minis (that I haven't finished painting)! Need to take some proper pics of my Warcry warbands. #nerdlings
Hmm... I can't recall what these are called. Corrupted electro priests or some such, from Blackstone Fortress. Scantily clad men with generators on their backs, cattle prods in their hands and high voltage cables on their heads. The UR-025 robot and a traitor guardsman from Blackstone Fortress. Painted UR in their classic pale grey/blue colour, with plenty of rust and scuff marks.Realized I don't have any really good photos of my Warcry warbands! Here are at least the leader and his right-hand man of the Untamed Beats. Think Conan the barbarian, but with bone weapons. I guess we're in Dark Sun territory here?

Mostly naked flesh and rippling muscles.A shot from a four player game of Warcry. The Iron Golem's ogre had just smashed a rival leader and was stalking his next victim, among the ruins of Eight Points.

Hmm... speaking of terrain, around this time I started putting together more terrain for Infinity, and was also seduced by Warcry (in large part thanks to the terrain in the original box!). I think nice looking terrain often enhance the experience more than nice looking minis. #nerdlings
Photo of an urban Infinity table I set up to introduce the game to a friend.

I'm using the cardstock terrain that came with the starter set (but reinforced inside), together with some scatter terrain from Zen Terrain (RIP, they made great terrain!).

Lots of small details to enhance the feel - planted sakura trees, lots of potted plants, benches and street lights. Same table, different angle. A main square of sorts, with planters, benches and trash gans. Oh, and unpainted (gasp!) resin walls. Need to rectify that.Again, same setup. Here in the middle of the game. A Zuyong heavy infantry is directing a Yaokong remote and two Zhanshi down a back alley.A shot I took right after I finished painting the terrain from the original Warcry core box. Made it pretty much as the official style - turqoise stone ruins, with bronze details and murky wooden parts.

The whole idea was to paint this as quickly and easily as possible, and allow myself to leave it "good enough" with the intention of going back later to add detailing. Of course, I still haven't done that, but it's a great trick to fool yourself into not feeling overwhelmed.

Did it all with a two rattle cans and a hefty drybrush.

It's been a year already?! 🥴 After having "been away" from Infinity for a bit, I got stuck back in when a friend picked up the new starter set. Painted some new (and old) Yu Jing figs, and fiiinally managed to finish the classic Guija TAG and a bunch of remotes. #nerdlings #infinitythegame
The original Guija TAG (mech) painted in a dark blue/grey and white colours, dwarfing a Guilang sniper.A Zuyong Invicible and a Hsien Warrior. Both heavy infantry wearing power armor. The colour scheme is slightly off-white armor, with blue grey accents and olive green cloth details. The whole group of models from the (then) new Yu Jing starter set. A Hsien, a Zuyong, a Tiger Soldier, three Zhanshi and a sneaky ninja with a bow.
They're joined by a Guija TAG, and two Husong remotes. All painted in the same off-white and blue/grey colour scheme. An army of bots! Two husong remotes, two Yaoxie and two Yaopu. They're all four legged robots, inspired by the Tachikoma from Ghost in the Shell.

Here rebased properly to fit the new edition of Infinity, and photographed among some Infinity terrain.

Alright, I think it's time for another batch of robits! #nerdlings
A photo of an Oppressor Command walker from Dropzone Commander. Stomping down a downtime street, with smaller, crab like Prowlers scuttling around it. Above them, dropships with more Prowlers are coming in.

Painted in purplish and greenish metallics, with glowing red eyes.Photo of a SSU heavy walker from Dust Tactics/Warfare. Two legged machine with two large cannons for arms, painted in the vein of Russian tanks during WW2. Fairly weathered and worn.Photo of two Jaguars, two Iguanas and a Weasel mechs, and a squad of infantry from Heavy Gear by Dream Pod 9.
These are in 1/144 scale, so there are three infantry per hex base, and the mechs are about 2-3 times the height of a person.

Painted in classic Northern tan with dark grey accents and metallic weapon and engine details. Bright blue sensor "eyes" and red missiles. The Ariadna company/faction of Deathmatch: TAG Raid from Corvus Belli. A large, crab-like and fairly industrial looking TAG (mech), a smaller catterpillared drone, and three infantry.

Painted in typical ariadnan green, with yellow accents.

Hell... might as well go through and just post robits for a while. #nerdlings
Three battlemechs, in tan colours with dark brown accents, and grey weapons. Scuffed and beat up!
A Thunderbolt, a catapult and a Shadowhawk. The Nomads faction from TAG Raid by Corvus Belli. Besides the infantry (and small, boxy remote) the main actor is the large miner mech. Painted in a dark red with white and black accents. The mech carries a drill and a heat cutter.A bunch of really tiny mecha from jovian Chronicles / Jovian Wars by Dream Pod 9, on flying stands. These are the smaller version released a few years ago, not the larger scale ones from the 90s.

Painted in classic CEGA colours, that also happen to coincide with Zeon colour scheme from Gundam. Light green on the trooper mechs, a red and white prototype, and a couple of black and grey special troopers.A group of seven Yu Jing remotes, and their mechanic handler, from Infinity, by Corus Belli. They're all four legged, kind of beetle like robots with various functions. Originally inspired by the tachikoma from Ghost in the Shell, these are a bit more spindly though.

Painted in dark grey and off-white and based on urban style bases. They're placed in a cyberpunk cityscape.

Hmm... I should make another battle report some day. While it takes a fair bit of time, I remember really having fun with this Dust Warfare after action report! firebroadside.blogspot.com/2013/09/dust... #nerdlings
A top down photo of a game of Dust Warfare in progress. I've added things like arrows to show movement, and little muzzle flashes and explosions to show who is attacking who, and damage done.

The table is made up of a crossroads and a number of ruined buildings, surround by trees and hedgerows.A small (150 points) SSU army for Dust Warfare. Two squads of infantry, two "gun tractors" and an artillery walker. They're placed on my friends game table, that's themed to Weird War II.

Hell, it's fun to just post more of them!
A 15 mm scale powerloader from Ground Zero Games. Big and chunky, with two forklift / claws for hands. Painted in a "caterpillar yellow" to underline that it's a working vehicle. Of course with lots of wear and tear. Two minis from Corvus Belli's futuristic sports game Aristeia - one is a kind of werewolf, so don't mind him. The other is Kozmo, a jet powered robot. Painted in white and vibrant green, with a pink cat face (kinda) on his display monitor face.A lance of mechs from Battletech. A Locust, a Battlemaster, a Commando and a Wolverine. Tan with brown accents, and light grey weapons. Cockpits are a clear blue. Quite a lot of wear and grime. The UR-025 robot (and a traitor guardsman) from GW's Blackstone Fortress. Slightly oldschool mechanical man look to it. Painted in the "official" style, witha pale bluegrey.

Oh, robits you say!? Got a lot of those! #FindFolkFriday #Nerdlings
Photo of a Dust Tactics (or Dust Warfare if you prefer, which we mostly played) SSU walker. A 1:48 scale, chunky, weird-WW2 style walking tank. Painted in a typical "Russian green" with plenty of wear and tear.Photo of a Northern Grizzly for Heavy Gear by Dream Pod 9. A fire support mech outfitted with artiller and a heavy machine gun. This is the metal version. Tan colour scheme with dark grey details.

Plenty of scratches and a buildup of dirt on its legs and tracks (mechs in Heavy Gear are like the Scopedog in VOTOMS, in that they have tank treads under their feet, allowing them to... skate!).Roger, roger! A photo of some droid miniatures from Star Wars Legion. A Tactical Droid is leading (from the front?! That's a brave tactical droid!) a squad of B2 battle droids, and a couple of Droidekas. Some regular old B1s are covering the rear.A photo of a Guijia TAG (mech) from Infinity by Corvus Belli, together with a Guilang sniper, to show the scale. This is the old sculpt that is very much based on the Landmates from Masamune Shirow's Appleseed. So chunky, big thighs, sensors on the back. No waldo arms though, which is weird.

Painted mine in a dark grey and off-white.

Sneak peek of classics to come. My first test turned out ok. Not going for the super vibrant 90s look, but certainly not the modern Blood Angels either. More of a 90s leaning middle ground. Of course, the poor slob needs some squad and company markings. But that's for later. #nerdlings #oldhammer

Got some classics painted! Here together with their inspiration. We'll see how they fare in the 2nd ed 40k game I have coming up! There are some detailing left (markings, back banners), but eh... good enough for a quick snap! #oldhammer #nerdlings
12 Eldar Guardians with shuriken catapults organized into two squads of six. They are a mix of Rogue Trader era one-piece sculpts, and the metal body with plastic arms combo.

Supporting them is the original Distort Cannon with crew.

They're painted as Alaitoc, so clear blue armour and yellow helmets. Since all the non-helmeted Eldar we see in Dave Gallagher's Alaitoc painting have red hair, I thought I'd do the same here.Dave Gallaghers painting from the 90s, showing a host of Alaitoc guardians supported by Dreadnoughts, Dark Reapers and a Warlock on a volacnic planet.

Been slowly building more parts for my RDL for Obsidian Protocol, and now have enough to run some small test games. Just need to give them some paint first. Am thinking industrial and grimy! The mechs are the same scale as the Infinity minis in the shots and come with magnets. #nerdlings #mecha

Took some time to paint the crew of the Normandy for the Mass Effect board game by @ithayla.bsky.social and @ericlang.bsky.social. Daughter curiously watched the progress and is now eager to try the game. She knows nothing of ME, so it'll be fun to see how she takes to the story and characters!
Photo of the painted miniatures for the game. Liara, Tali, MaleShep, Wrex, FemShep and Garrus. Each is in their default/starting gear and colours.

I've replaced the moulded bases with clear acrylic ones, to make them match the terrain they're on, and not obscure board details.

Will be aiming for the same colour scheme as the Rocawork minis for TAG Raid, that I painted last year.
The Rocawork faction for TAG Raid. A large TAG (mech) and for support infantry, as well as some terrain pieces.

Painted in a bright (some would say classic Nomad) red, with white and grey accents.

I've had a bunch of Nomads (Corregidor to be precise) stashed away for more than a decade now, and suddenly felt the urge to get a force table ready. Mainly so my Yu Jing have something to fight in demo games! This is 200pts where I can easily switch between the Remote and McMurrough (werewolf).

This made me pull the Thrawn Trilogy Sourcebook for WEG's Star Wars rpg off the shelf. I love how well Zahn's practical style goes together with WEG's game. Which, of course, was created by people who also had to think about how things in SW _actually_ worked (and really carried SW for a decade!).
Same cover as the book (see post 1), just with a different title. Chewie still looking gormless.

Martin Takaichi @beepluck.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
In my teens I read a few EU Star Wars books, and I remember them as bad to mediocre. So people saying the Thrawn trilogy is good, have always garnered a sceptical "sure, buddy" from me. However, reading along with @morecivilized.bsky.social now, and let me tell you - those people were right!
Original cover to Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire. It is fantastic.

Starting with the plain stuff - on a starfueld backdrop Luke, Leia and Han have their blown-up faces in the shot. Han and Leia (with a gun!) basically from RotJ, while Luke looks more like ESB. Behind them three X-wings fly past and three full figure stormtroopers can be seen.

On the right side Chewie is just kinda... standing there. No action pose or anything, looks like he's waiting on the space bus. On the left side is some blue dude(!), with a white imperial Grand Admiral's uniform, arms across his chest. He's also just standing, but as an Grand Admiral I guess he tends to stand around more than Chewie does. Wonder who this could be.

Now we come to the best part. In the center of the image, framed by the three hero heads and the title of the book, and definitely the BIG focus of the cover, is an old white guy in what looks like a dark brown bathrobe. The bathrobe is open down to his midsection, revealing an absolutely RIPPED body and some kind of amulet that he has around his neck.

The rock-hard abs are in contrast with his long white hair, and beard. Hold your hand over the body so you just see the face, and you think "ah, it's an old space wizard, haggard but wise", but no, this space gramps looks like he could put you in a headlock and throw you across the room. He also has a very stern look - like he would kick Ben's ass.

Angry space gramps is holding his arms up, palms out fingers splayed. And from each finger (except the thumb) comes a thin... laser beam? It doesn't look like force lightning - no crackles or anything - more like he has a small laser gun in each fingertip and in a festive manner just blasting them all at once! Could this be the Mifune type jedi master Lucas wanted all along? Stern but wise? Harsh but helpful? Read and find out.

And that's it! Obviously, there are no other important characters that need to be on the cover. None at all.

More space and mecha stuff in the form of the reboot of Jovian Chronicles / Lightning Strike from Dream Pod 9, in the form of Jovian wars (basically Gundam crossed with The Expanse). Love my DP9 mechs and we played a short Jovian Chronicles campaign. Should get the rest of these painted.
Jovian Wars minis. For Jovian Wars they're supposed to be three to a stand, but since I mainly want to use them for Jovian Chronicles (the rpg) and Lightning Strike (the older space skirmish game), I've mounted them one per flying base.

They're tiny, 1/1000 scale, so about 10-15mm. A group of three Jovian Pathfinders and a Centurion, in white and blue, facing of against three green CEGA Wyverns.A Jovian Stormrider and two Retaliators.CEGA Dragonrider flanked by two Syreen. The experimental Dragonrider in red and white, and the Syreen in the typical CEGA green.Shot of one of the battles in our Jovian Chronicles campaign. The PCs were checking an old transport ship (unpainted(!) CEGA Poseidon battleship as stand-in), and discovered that it was smuggling EXO-armours into Jovian space.

Oh, and I painted the federation half of Star Trek Fleet Captains from Wizkids. Some dodgy components (the card stuff mainly) but a fun game! Klingons and Romulans still not painted though. #startrek
12 Wizkids Clix style Federation ships, ranging from the original series up through Voyager.

Speaking of Star Wars, X-Wing was new at this point and I actually attended some tournaments where I managed to take first place twice, and win the Falcon and Slave I pre-release. They're already painted of course, but I did take some time to add engine glow and some detailing.
Rear-view of Slave I. I've simply painted the engine parts so they look to be glowing yellowish orange.A Y-wing and two X-wings. Specifically Gold 2, Red 5 and Red 2. Had fun researching the models used for filming to add the individual details for specific ships.

We started up an Imperial Assault campaign (core box) which motivated to get my paints out! Sorastro was a great inspiration and here I wanted to focus on getting most of the troopers to a board game standard and spend a little exta time with characters. #starwars
Imperial miniatures from Star Wars Imperial Assault. Vader in focus, flanked by imperial guards. Stormtroopes and prope droids in the background, and an AT-ST looming over all of them. The scum and villainy of the core box - IG-88, a bunch of trandoshan hunters and a couple of nexus. The player heroes we had in our campaign - a smuggler, an officer, a wannabe/could be jedi and a rebel soldier. Mostly in colours of beigre, brown and orange.A lone AT-ST walker. Fairly dirty and scuffed.

Around this time I also got into Dropzone Commander (and later Dropfleet) and also got into the mindset of always painting TWO armies so you're not stuck with an army by your lonesome and no other players. I love how cinematic Dropzone looks even with just the basic paper terrain!
A small Scourge army for Dropzone Commander. Biomechanical vehicles and and infantry. In this picture they're posed disembarked on a city square, with dropsips in the background.Zoom in on Scourge Demolishers infantry - kind of mind-controlled cybernetic ogres. Flanked by a few Prowler spider drones. The same army shot as before but this time with everything embarked. The tanks slot into their CD-tray style transport and the giant command walker and small spider walkers I magnetized so they hang under their respective transports.Zoom in on Scourge infantry - mind-controlled cybernetic humans basically. Flanked by a few Prowler spider drones and their hover transport vehicle.

I feel this in my bones! As much as I like the kind of plastic minis modern technology can create, the added time it takes to paint them can sometimes drain my energy before I even get started. Which is why it's nice to have options! #oldhammer
A squad of Rogue Trader era Eldar guardians. A mix of one piece casts and a bunch of those that had metal bodies with plastic arms.

Work in progress shot as I'm painting them as Alaitoc. Currently working on the blue.

If you see this, post a vehicle (or vehicles in this case)! #nerdlings #dropzone
A Scourge biomechanical army for Dropzone Commander. All loaded onto their dropships. All the models are physically in their dropships either because the fit (like an old CD rack) or because I've magnetised them. The same army with everything unloaded. Tanks infantry and the big arachnid-esque command vehicle.Scourge infantry looking down at their despoiler overlord from a rooftop. The Scourge Despoiler command walker. Big and nasty! Surrounded by other scourge troops.
