It’s not “do good work and be successful.” It’s doing good work, talking about the work, figuring out how to get your work to the right people, accepting that good work is slower than bad work and finding a path through that anyways

Feels like a big opportunity, especially given a move from focus on things to focus on experiences. Kind of surprising that nobody is doing it though, which makes me think it must be harder than it seems?

Every year I buy a bunch of gift cards to local restaurants as gifts for family members. Every year I’m surprised that only like 10-20% of the local restaurants I find have a way to purchase a gift card directly on the website, so for every 15 sites I visit, I’m getting like 1 or 2 gift cards.

I gotchu: spaetzl at the market, kaisercharrn (translated as “emporer’s madness”, like a shredded pancake for dessert), and pumpkin risotto from the Michelin starred airport hotel restaurant (I got stuck an extra night). Not pictured: dumplings, bratwurst, gluhwine, and much great cheese!

The #1 piece of clothing I wish I owned is my HS math team shirt, which was a navy and white polo with a number on the back. The number was the same for everyone, 2^0, because “second to none, we’re number one”. Absolute perfection.

I’ve had this too in the past! This one isn’t my favorite referral policy, but it’s the one I have to go by. Wanted to share because I know each co is different, and it’s hard out there and want to make sure have the best shot of getting a role they love, esp if they have a potential referral!

I’ve had a bunch of referral requests/questions lately which is great because I’d love to refer and work with you wonderful people. Thing is, I can’t refer folks after they’ve applied. If you’re interested, best to reach out before applying! I know every co is different so wanted to PSA :)

As an added bonus, the first time I installed Python and had no idea what I was doing, I walked downstairs and my mom walked me through it 💀 she was teaching Python before I picked it up.

I’m v grateful for her example. I grew up with reversed gender roles (my dad was a talk show guest on being “Mr Mom” in the 90s) and got a front-row seat to tech advances like car phones, AIM and chat rooms (😂). Watching my COBOL-programming mom return to tech has been so cool and I’m so proud.

She took a ~15 year detour and a big pay cut to teach HS and college AP calc and comp sci, where she got more time with our family, upped the school’s AP calc scores significantly, and coached a math team which won states several times over in Maine. (I’m a proud mathlete at heart.)

Yep! My mom is currently an architect. Her most recent role before that was in cybersecurity for Space Force and growing up she worked in tech. She had a degree in CS before that was a thing and worked on cell phones as networks were coming online in the 90s before starting her own consulting firm.

That’s the right idea, yes! The specific “tracer bullet” verbiage comes from The Pragmatic Programmer.
120
Caitlin Hudon @beeonaposy.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
Esp when you’re working on complex problems, even a really basic interactive model helps you to hill climb in the right direction lots faster. Tracer bullets, design sprints, prototypes, Amazon press releases, it’s all the same concept, and such a multiplier once you get good at applying it.
130
Caitlin Hudon @beeonaposy.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
A financial model is also a great tracer bullet. There’s such solid value in working a problem end-to-end in a basic way before going deeper. Building a basic and imperfect model that goes from basic inputs to ARR lets you learn a lot faster than trying to build a complex one from scratch.
130
Caitlin Hudon @beeonaposy.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
I think this also inherently builds trust — as you can interrogate a thing, you start to more deeply understand it, and when you can reliably predict what a response to a change will be, you build trust in its output. Data is important to get right but it’s the interface that matters most here.

Caitlin Hudon @beeonaposy.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
There’s something very comforting in changing an input and seeing the waterfall of impact. Financial models are a fantastic data product in that sense — being interactive means users can build business context quickly, gut-check hypotheses, and see future outcomes in real-time. It’s kind of fun!
