Hey, maybe if every single national leader ends up immensely loathed for reasons that people can't really consistently articulate, almost irrespective of their actual policies or ideology, it points to a larger mystery about politics that we should solve

I've spent the past three weeks speaking to residents on a housing estate in Richmond. In February they were told that because the Renters' Rights Act is coming in, their landlord was going to have to raise the rent. The smallest increase I've seen is about £500. The largest is £800.

🗺️ Sanctioned tanker routes through the Channel and Danish Straits on their way to northern Russian ports. From my piece with @ninakuryata.bsky.social on the UK's response to shadow fleets, in @theobserveruk.bsky.social today 🔗 observer.co.uk/news/interna...
Sanctioned oil tanker routes
Since August 2025, among 312 tankers sanctioned since September
Source: Marine Traffic

The map shows sanctioned tanker routes through the Channel, Danish Straits, and moving past Sweden towards the Baltic Sea. Heaviest concentration of routes is through the Channel and past Denmark while there is also some traffic round the west of the UK and Ireland.

Me and @beckypinnington.bsky.social tried (and failed) to identify the user who made the infamous Maduro trade, and instead found armchair sleuths, forensic experts, and a congressman who wants to put a stop to obvious conflicts of interest for @theobserveruk.bsky.social

If Trump or Vance or Musk do something that seems completely irrational to you, ask yourself “is this getting them more attention?” If the answer is “yes” then actually it makes perfect sense. And the answer will always be yes.

If you read this and thought "I don't understand how that's meant to work", it's really very simple! It's meant to give Elon permission to continue doing whatever he likes.

Got to analyse @officialcharts.bsky.social this week, as a little treat 🎁
This is a histogram – also known as a column chart – that shows the number of songs in the official UK top 20 on Christmas day each year that were explicitly about Christmas.

Before 2017, it was unusual for there to be more than 1-2 Christmas songs in the top 20 on Christmas Day.

However we can see that over time the number of Christmas songs begins to increase after 2017.

Since 2020 more than half of the top 20 were Christmas songs each year, driven mainly by streaming algorithms.

Britain’s council tax is arbitrary, regressive and needs fixing
Based on estimated house values 33 years ago, it is not fit for purpose
