Just a reminder as the new academic year kicks off - the UK government has deliberately, ruthlessly, throttled the recruitment of international students, solely to pander to racists, and the resultant 25%+ fall in numbers can and will only accelerate some universities into bankruptcy.

What's gender go to do with it? Within UK SHAPE disciplines, women are 51% of academic staff (39% of professors). In STEM, that's 45% of all academics (27% of professors). What are the impacts of disproportionate SHAPE redundancies on those stats? Is anyone attending to gender equality? 1/2

A quarter of young children now live in the private rented sector. In fact, children are now more likely than adults to do so. 🏠 More in our latest Housing Outlook➡️ buff.ly/SNjZ77G
Figure showing the growing number of children living in the private rented sector.

While fewer than one-in-ten under-11s lived in the PRS in 2000-01, by 2024-25 it was one-in-four. The number of children living in the private rented sector has tripled – from 1.1. million children in 2000-01 to 3.2 million in 2024-25. As a result, children are now more likely than adults to live in the tenure (23 per cent compared to 22 per cent).

Relative child poverty has remained stubbornly high over the last twenty years and has risen over the past decade. Without action, levels will soon break records. Scrapping the two-child limit in full would be the most targeted and cost-effective way of reducing child poverty.

The release of the 2025 two-child limit statistics statement makes for interesting reading, not least because (unlike in previous years) it includes demographic data. Most notable is that 98% of impacted households included at least one female claimant, whilst only 47% contained at least one male.

You have to laugh, really.
One Downing Street figure said McSweeney had harboured reservations over the welfare bill in the first place.

“Everyone with any understanding of either the welfare system or PLP was arguing against it,” they said. “Morgan saw that it could be painted as balancing the books on the back of the poor.”Chancellor Rachel Reeves cut the winter fuel allowance last July after the election to bolster the public finances, claiming the previous Conservative government had overspent.

“It was something the Treasury had been trying to get away with for ages,” said a former senior government figure.

They said Morgan McSweeney, then Starmer’s head of political strategy but now chief of staff, “pretty much hung his head in his hands” when he learned of the decision “because he knew what it meant politically”.
