Technical audits, title tags, link building, and indexing can all go sideways when AI applies SEO best practices without enough context.

Depending on who you listen to, AI is either the end of SEO or its savior. Having done SEO professionally since I was on the team that built Walgreens.com in 2000, I think both are hyperbole.

The truth is that AI can help SEOs do things we’ve never been able to do before — and do them quickly — while also completely derailing our SEO if it’s left unattended. I have many examples of both. But first, I want to focus on 10 times Claude went off the rails and I had to catch it before it could make things worse.

For context, I’ve been using AI professionally since ChatGPT came out, including in my work as a senior SEO at Intuit QuickBooks.

This year, I’ve been digging deeper into how Claude handles SEO, using it for a 41-site audit and guide for the Chicago Independent Venue League (CIVL), and while vibe coding my own AI stylist app, Dressed. Since I can’t share client examples, I’ll use examples from CIVL and Dressed here.
