My kid left for university last week. I spent a couple of days feeling oddly bereft, but I'm feeling a lot better now. He seems to be doing okay, and I can do things like dust his bedroom for the first time in an age. So there's that.

If you are in your late thirties to mid-forties right now, there is a good chance that you have spent most of your life in a cycle of making some sort of home on the internet only to have it crumble beneath you like chalk and having to start over.

Dad's 85th bday dinner. Mostly okay but mum gave my sisters a late Easter present and then just said to me "I haven't got one for you". On the one hand I don't care about stuff. On the other it's the principle of the thing. I'm quite annoyed.

My mother, who is in deep denial about her short term memory loss, keeps telling me Obama was shot. Now, obviously, he wasn't. He's doing good. She's thinking of JFK. She's been confidently incorrect about it twice now but her memory is FINE /sarcasm

Not pictured: Haruki Murakami’s wife, or indeed whoever is cooking, cleaning, paying bills, running errands, doing the laundry, answering emails, etc like yea his routine is goals, but let’s not lie to ourselves about all the invisible work others are doing to enable him to have that routine

quote from Haruki Murakami: “I keep to this routine every day without variation. The repetition itself becomes the important thing; it’s a form of mesmerism. I mesmerize myself to reach a deeper state of mind.

“But to hold to such repetition for so long—six months to a year—requires a good amount of mental and physical strength. In that sense, writing a long novel is like survival training. Physical strength is as necessary as artistic sensitivity.”

Talking to my mum (who has memory issues) is just so HARD. We have a not-good relationship, and her old trick whenever you accused her of something was "I never said that" (because she didn't want to admit it) Now she just can't remember, and I have to listen to the save 7 conversations on repeat.

Every single person over the age of 18 should receive $1500 a month. Every person over the age of 25 should receive $3000 a month. There should be financial, judicial and emotional punishments for being a billionaire. It should be learned and agreed upon to destroy it as a sin against society.

Hah, so nurse sister lost her temper and hung up on dad when he said he wasn't going to the GP. Seems her ire was enough to make mum and dad go. They probably hoped the GP would tell them not to worry. instead, they've got a referral to the neurology department and they've given him aspirin.

Tree people came to cut down trees on land that abuts our garden. They did most of them, but didn't touch the giant ash tree "T6" which they were meant to prune branches off of. Weird, but I thought they'd come back the next day. They Did Not. Eventually I emailed and their terse secretary was /1

Lol so, this person on Tumblr replied to my screenshot about the CW bottom Arthur thing. Except this isn't the CW person. It's someone else who has confused me for another writer friend they have been harassing. I am now getting another writer's daft hate (and they don't write Arthur like that btw)

panel 3, step three of the plan: "have to edit 20k before posting"

panel 4, he looks distressed as reality sets in: "have to edit 20k before posting"
