Quilicura, Chile, one of the communities I wrote about in EMPIRE OF AI, has launched a brilliant initiative to inspire more responsible AI prompting. Today, don't use AI; ask the townspeople instead: quili.ai. So heartened to see this creative act of resistance.

Public trust in science and technology is a serious, growing problem, especially now. Instead of trying to solve it with better communication, we should adopt a more inclusive approach to innovation that takes low-tech, incremental, and system-wide solutions seriously. My new piece @science.org 👇🏽🧵

I am so proud of this 🚨new report🚨, and its analysis of the environmental, social, economic, and justice impacts of advanced nuclear reactors, frequently touted as simple solutions to the problems of climate change, energy needs, and data centers. Learn more at our Dec 11th webinar! myumi.ch/2rp9w
Describes the top line conclusions of a new report on the impacts of advanced nuclear reactors, including that they will 1) entrench global disparities, 2) privilege markets over the public good, 3) disregard local and indigenous knowledge, 4) intensify environmental injustices, and 5) abandon promises of local development and empowerment.

I learned so much about nuclear energy and the history of an incredible assortment of technologies (dynamite! cook stoves! sewers!) working on this project, and I am so glad that it is finally out in the world.

For years, officials in the Czech Republic had pushed a dam project to protect a river south of Prague, and the critically endangered species living in it. But the project stalled. In the meantime, the beavers of Prague simply built dams themselves, saving the government some 1.2 million euros.

Czech Dam Project Was Stalled by Bureaucracy. Beavers Built Their Own.
The dam project, drafted in 2018 and based on a former military training site south of Prague, had been delayed by land negotiations. Local beavers built several dams, saving the government more than ...

“Our university is pleased to present this updated org chart that most accurately captures our system of governance (which management scientists term “Kafkaesque bureaucracy meets Lord of the Files,” though no one understands these references since we cut our literature requirements).”

‘Chemists fought no battles for Jews,’ historian Helmut Maier has said. ‘They fought no battles for immigrants. They only fought … a battle for their professional interests.’
