We used to buy all our fruit and veg in lbs. The EU forced us to standardise on grams and kilos. We also used to use stones and lbs for discussing our weight.

Make sure you visit the salt mine. Also every human should go to Auschwitz at least once. If only just to be reminded what low humans are really capable of.

Job applicants are using AI to write resumes and prep interview answers. Companies are using AI to screen those applications and conduct initial interviews. We’ve officially automated both sides of a process meant to measure human connection. The irony is genuinely unreal.

I'm less upset and the candidate side of this, as applying for a job is hard (especially at the moment). Usually the pre-interview part is assessing skills that are not necessary for the actual job. Using AI to screen candidates is horrendous.

I always hated Stackoverflow. It was only good to find the answer to an easy question, that you happened to not know the answer to. If you asked anything challenging or abstract, you either got crickets, told you were wrong or told it was a duplicate.

The fundamentals of this declaration could be applied to any field. Often, the journey is the thing of value, more than the destination.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

Agreed. I used an LLM to fix a bug I found in an Open-Source project I use, that's written in F#. I don't know F#, but that 3 line change didn't introduce any regressions, all the tests passed, and the owner merged it. It resolved about 5 related issues in other repos. That's a net positive.

If you could devise a policy that meant big business could absorb most of the work, overcharge for it, send many of those roles abroad — and maybe the profits too — while passing business costs onto the worker on a fixed term zero rights basis You’d have thought the left would be against it! #IR35

I remember seeing this in the cinema with my Grandfather. He wanted to see it, but my Grandmother didn't like violent movies. So he asked me. I knew nothing about it. To this day, I remember looking over at him during the reveal at the end and the excitement on his face. God I miss him.

The Guardian once asked me 'what one change would you make to achieve Black equality in Britain?' and it feels appropriate to share my answer again
Athena Kugblenu: Allow Black people to be mediocre too!
Athena Kugblenu
I would like to replace #blackexcellence with #blackmediocrity. True equality is when our talent:recognition ratio is allowed to be as broad as white people’s. Lewis Hamilton had to win two Formula One titles before he bagged BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2014; Greg Rusedski only had to get battered by Pat Rafter to win his. Kwasi Kwarteng steered the economy towards an iceberg and got sacked. Jeremy Hunt drove the NHS over a cliff, now he’s chancellor. Don’t get me started on how many football clubs get ruined by freshly retired white footballers while very qualified Black managers are overlooked. When the arc of the moral universe bends towards Black people failing upwards as their peers do, we will be in the promised land.
