Whether consumer choice could help define this industry at its infancy I'd say those choices are being made at companies who drive most of the use. (Personally I don't know what an individual could be doing to use much computing resources) So again the pressure needs to be top down on the companies

And the way to impact that is through regulation and politically. There IS a movement to hold data centers accountable. To the extent it will be effective is because it is being waged on the political front, not by trying to dictate consumer behavior

My point, which I've been thinking about a lot (yesterday's "Twitter has the juice again" article being the latest impetus) is that consumer action as a mode of change isn't working. I don't judge you if you drive (I never have). Consumers are locked into a system handed down to them from above

It's a pretty bright line, and again, we are all here because we hate Elon specifically and have a powerful personal motivation to seeing him lose. But Amazon is building out identically gas powered data centers in Mississippi right now. We need room in our heart to hate a lot of people

The health impacts of gas refineries to neighborhoods doesnt cause people to drive less either. Or consume less meat, etc. This would be an extreme outlier for individuals to change their consumption based on the impact of aggregate use
