I guess my contribution to the Wuther Heights Discourse(TM) is that I actually don't like it when people claim it's not a love story. Heathcliff and Cathy's love for each other *is* genuine. It's just been warped and twisted by Wuthering Heights and the prescriptive roles society gives them.

Id love to read a novel that is an argument for why two people should *not* become a couple. It just shouldn't be on the same shelf as all the books about couples getting together and living happily ever after/happy for now.

Genre is a marketing tool. It sets reader expectations. If you hand me a book and say "this is a fantasy," I expect it to have magic in it. If you hand me book and say "this is a romance," I expect the main couple to have a happy ending.

That novel would be SO boring without him. He smashes his head against a tree when his girlfriend dies. He tried to murder a dog in front of its owner, and she married him anyway. He's a horrible father. We have no idea where his money came from. He really is The Character Ever.

Chiming in to add C.S. Pacat (Captive Prince and Dark Rise) to this list as well. Not to mention how often the "by and for women" narrative seems to assume straight women when most of these authors are openly queer. Like, there's very clearly A Reason these women like writing about queer people.

I said this on threads but I'll say it here too. Netflix buying out WB is so fucking bleak and exactly why I started collecting dvds. I don't know what will happen to new releases though since Netflix is so anti dvd, they can't yank it away or double the price of it once you've bought it.
