He pretty much already did with the Pirates, if we accept that his form is closer to what he was with the '25 Giants, compared to the '23 Giants. He is again able to lean on his slider more, which I would guess the Yankees probably did not want him doing due to the ballpark dimensions.

One thing I will add is that cost is not really much of a factor here with the relievers. Sure, Camilo Doval projected to get $6.6M is a bit steep, but not prohibitive. It is more so the roster spots that the Giants could use to upgrade from the current options.

...of the same bullpen that was one of the worst in 2026. I can't say that is the right message. This is a lot of words to say that the non-tender deadline will probably signal how much work they plan to do to address the bullpen.

...So, if they tender a contract to five of those relievers, that leaves pretty much one (maybe two) spots to upgrade the bullpen. That is enough room to add a leverage reliever, but it also conveys that the 9th inning was the real issue while bringing back much...

...Using this purely as a hypothetical. That is now five relievers brought back, and I believe Foley is the only one who can be optioned, to pair with Dylan Smith and Trent Harris. Keaton Winn (1 MiLB option) and Matt Gage (out of options) are somewhere in the mix...

The non-tender deadline will be something of a signal for how the Giants plan to build next year's bullpen. They have 7 arb-eligible relievers, if we count Rowan Wick, who has a team option. Let's say they tender a contract to Doval, Rodríguez, Foley, Hentges, and Buttó...

The Giants traded most of their expiring contracts at the deadline. JT Brubaker was the lone exception. Below is their total 2026 AAV for each player, which the Giants pitched in some cash to facilitate those deals. In total, they have close to $50M coming off the box...

They made a lot of their protections in season, and while teams are unsure of whether there will be a R5 draft, they will likely operate as if there will be one.

I'd expect the Giants to add some catching depth in the upper minors this offseason. Adrián Sugastey and Onil Perez are both scheduled to reach free agency, and they were some of their better defensive catchers.

They can probably shave off $5M in arbitration salaries once they get to that point. Pre-arbitration salaries will almost certainly go up. If there is a CBT, that number will likely increase as well, and it did increase notably during the last CBA discussion.

baseballjeff1.bsky.social @baseballjeff1.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
There are several non-tender candidates in this amount, and the pre-arbitration amount is a rough estimate. No one knows what the CBT will look like in 2027 or if they move to a hard cap. That said, this is where the Giants will start the offseason in terms of AAV.

He probably will not win a Fielding Bible Award, but DRS is heavily weighted into that. The SDI accounts for 25% of the Gold Glove voting, and he was rated among the top defenders (through 8/9/26) in that regard. He likely will not win that either.

baseballjeff1.bsky.social @baseballjeff1.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It was a weird year for Matt Chapman, but despite missing half the season, some defensive metrics loved his work. Both DRS and the SABR Defensive Index (SDI) had him at the top of his position.

If they add someone like Bubic, I think they would need to get a pretty reliable depth arm in case of an injury. If they add 2 of these 4 starters, then you've got a solid short-term nucleus for the rotation, which would be an improvement over this season.

A few starting pitchers I like as fits for what the Giants should be looking for: 1. Kevin Gausman (Decent 1st half, eats innings) 2. Sonny Gray (Always effective) 3. Clay Holmes (Skill set would do well at Oracle Park) 4. Kris Bubic (Effective when healthy but rarely healthy)

... I don't have this listed, but a left-handed-hitting infield utility bat would not hurt. Maybe they hope that Marcelo Mayer wins that type of role in spring training, but that is also an extremely limited market in free agency. Gavin Lux might make sense in that role.

...and the non-tender market. They need help up and down that unit. A Lane Thomas type (h/t Electro, I believe) checks off a few boxes for No. 3 on the list. They simply have to get better against left-handed pitching, and it is going to take more than one addition...

...the bar is extremely low now for next season. Maybe they are retooling for 2028, but is that how Buster Posey and Co. can operate? He is under contract through 2027, so it might be a weird year to thread the needle between 2027 and future seasons.

I also wonder what the bar is for the Giants in terms of wins next year. Assuming a 162-game season (bold assumption), is 75 wins now considered a positive year? I mean, that would be a 10-win improvement over this season. It feels like...

I think one of the things that stood out from the Giants' press conference yesterday is that there really was not a sense of urgency from the leadership group. Just a general sense I got from it. No concrete example. I know they felt the sting of a 97-loss season.

baseballjeff1.bsky.social @baseballjeff1.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Not surprisingly, the Giants are rolling the dice on their current leadership group and hoping for better results. Within the next 365 days, they should know whether that was the right call and will have enough information to make an evaluation on that group by then.

I found it troubling that Tony Vitello could not answer whether he has control of the clubhouse. He could have just said yes and moved on to the next question, but he said a lot in his response, but none of which answered the question.

I don't think the Giants really answered anything meaningful, which often comes up in these post-mortem chats. That said, you hope that the leadership group inspires confidence about the direction of the club. I don't think they really did that, either.
