Agree, and I also think a part of all of this is how few people in healthcare have been paying attention. Nurses in particular are really not well equipped to push back on the question "why are you in an N95?" (which IPAC still asks me)

AGPs: ‘DEAD IN THE WATER !’ The Inquiry considered the vexed question of Government only allowing RPE for Aerosol Generating Procedures. It has now been laid to rest – or at least it should be, unless DHSC and NHS persist in ignoring Lady Hallett’s recommendations. /18 of 23

The Inquiry discussed the bizarre framing of IPC guidance issued around winter 2021/22 as to when Respiratory Protective equipment should be worn using terms like ‘wholly’ or ‘predominantly’ airborne without making a clear statement as to how each disease is spread. /16 of 23

Your regular reminder that the litmus test for integrity and due diligence in medical leadership is their willingness to admit and remedy their failures. One who will not address their errors RE airborne transmission of COVID is negligent, dishonest, or both. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/19/s...
Lost Lessons
Dr. Green was echoing the words of William and Mildred Wells, a husband-and-wife team who discovered the threat of airborne germs in the 1930s. They famously protected children in Philadelphia schools from a measles epidemic in 1940 by installing ultraviolet lamps that disinfected classroom air.

“I believe that a provision of pure air for children (and adults) to breathe should be looked upon as of equal importance to the provision of pure water and pure milk,” Mildred Wells later wrote.

But she and her husband failed to sway their colleagues, and the threat of airborne germs went underappreciated for generations. When Covid hit in 2020, the World Health Organization emphatically stated that it was not airborne — which turned out to be wrong.

This was entirely foreseeable once HCWs realised that, a few weeks earlier, (13/3/20) they'd been deceived into believing FRSMs would keep them safe while delivering close-quarter care to infectious patients. HSE, to their eternal shame, stood by like toothless tigers and just let this happen. 8/19

Surely better PPE must be provided? @who.int I feel as a fellow doctor & as one impacted significantly with the aftermath of an airborne infectious disease (Covid 19) - that must not let these healthcare workers catch Ebola as a result of substandard face masks. They need FFP2 or FFP3 protection!

This is why surgical masks were inadequate -Covid was airborne & we were told to wear gappy surgical masks & handwash for a predominantly airborne virus. A lot of the impacts from lockdown could also be from mild or asymptomatic COVID infections caught in the supermarket or hospital or bubble!

The Covid inquiry stated 16 days ago that the guidance was ‘flawed’ Covid is officially airborne. So that means the surgical masks worn would not give much protection in poorly ventilated places. It was so stuffy in the vaccine centre I visited I stood on a chair and opened the window.

The #CovidInquiry isn't in the past @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social @sharonhodgsonmp.bsky.social @england.nhs.uk It's the present. NHS workers and patients are still exposed to Covid-19 daily in hospitals now without the correct (or any) PPE😷 As the Report says, they need FFP masks, not baggy blue👇
Extract from the Covid Inquiry Report Module 3: Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on healthcare, showing two types of protective equipment (PPE) appropriate to contain aerosol viruses: an FFP2 or FFP3 mask, white, moulded from dense material, with round the head straps, and an air-purifying hood, a plastic moulded respirator with a visor and a filter.Extract from The UK Covid Inquiry Report, Module 3: 'The UK’s approach to infection prevention and control in healthcare settings during the Covid-19 pandemic suffered from three fundamental flaws:
Assumptions about respiratory viruses: There was an over-reliance on historical assumptions about how to distinguish between modes of transmission for respiratory viruses. This led to an initial misunderstanding of the level of risk posed by aerosol transmission and a failure to recommend sufficient protections against it.
Insufficient caution: Alternative routes of transmission other than droplet or contact were prematurely ruled out. This meant that pre-existing assumptions that Covid-19 was not ordinarily spread by aerosols became the received wisdom until the contrary was proved.
Lack of structure and expertise of the UK IPC Cell... The combined effect of these interconnected flaws led to a failure to properly protect patients and healthcare workers against the risks posed by Covid-19.'

Why is it so seismic for the Covid inquiry to state this week that ‘Covid is airborne’? 1. It means that we never had the correct advice to protect ourselves and still don’t! Covid hasn’t stopped being airborne. 2. It means so much could have been prevented. 3. It means healthcare has been …

Why are UK officials more concerned with “not panicking the public” and sticking to droplet dogma, the same deadly mistake they made with Covid, instead of informing the public properly of precautions to take, like masking to protect against dangerous meningitis infection? 🤬 Reposted with alt text

'Something isn't making sense'
Ms Jones-Roberts urged for a wider vaccine rollout but herself has not been vaccinated, but she has had antibiotics. She also confirmed her staff have had antibiotics.
She also voiced her confusion about the how the outbreak spread.
"My point to the government has been, there's been a lot of talk about how hard it is to transmit, but then there's also, at the same time, saying the conversation is that nobody needs to panic and we don't all need the vaccine, but at the same time, the things don't quite add up.
"Actually, it was transmitted a lot more easily, by the looks of it, than they're suggesting, so something isn't making sense somewhere."

Surely UKHSA should at least be considering the possibility of AEROSOL transmission? Many official public health websites (the UK Green Book, NICE, ECDC, and, until a day ago when it was suddenly deleted, the WHO) all mention aerosol as a mode of transmission for meningococcal bacteria…
