I literally discussed with my first-year students on like, what, day six (?) of our course that we read (broadly defined) texts (broadly defined) to learn about experiences beyond ourselves. My phrase was "Why would I just want to read only about red-heads with digestive issues?"

Which, when I was a late-undergrad (and, let's face it, post-doc), was what I considered "making it".

Keep track! Any one of those instances might be worth a nice, short N&Q (or similar) piece.

they folded some bit into History (as so many unis have), but let a lot of folks go. Even at Grenfell (undergrad pop. c. 900), we have a standalone Classics programme offering a minor, staffed by one valiant scholar. Her courses are often cross-listed with History.

Same problem for us in NFLD this autumn: none of the maples in my backyard changed colour; they just got black splotches in August and are now on the ground.

Turnitin steals student writing so it can catch students stealing writing. It requires students to upload papers for free or, even worse, professors upload student papers without their permission to a machine that now owns the paper. No compensation. It's a super fascist ed tech tool.

Once again, for the politicians, business leaders, and journalists still actively posting on X/Twitter: why? You're using a platform that's owned by someone who's trying to break up your country. The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying
Use of artificial intelligence
By registering with ISBN Canada, you declare that your book was created by a human author. You may use AI tools only for limited support tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, or formatting your book. You must not use AI to generate the text, create the artwork, or translate the book. ISBN Canada does not issue ISBNs for works whose content is primarily generated by AI. LAC is currently reviewing its policy regarding the use of AI content creation and our guidance is subject to change.

As I’ve asked many times now, what constituencies does a university president represent? Because too often, the answer seems to not include anyone who works or studies at the university, and that seems like a problem.
