It was straw work class last week. The round basket (not mine) was made in the 1970s. Look at the quality of bundling and stitching. The oval baskets are mine, one bere, one oat straw. I prefer to work with bere barley straw. In the past bere straw was as useful as the grain. 🏺 🪡 #straw #baskets
Image from my straw basket class, two of my oval baskets made by the traditional technique of 'bundling' the oat straws together and stitching it together with string. One is finished and contains tools and string, the other is half complete. Also a cup of tea and a newspaper. One of the group brought in a wonderful oat straw basket made in the 1970s. The stitching is so neat, the basket is very strong and made from bere barley straw. On the right is a glimpse of my basket, also made with bere. The 1970s bere barley straw basket, showing the base, and my bere straw basket to the right. Left, oat straw, middle, 1970s bere basket, right my bere basket, background straw workers.

Helpful papers for trainees #4: Pot size matters: a meta-analysis of the effects of rooting volume on plant growth This one is for the plant biologists. Experimental design matters! 🧪 🌱 🌏 #PlantBiology #AcademicSky Link: www.publish.csiro.au/fp/FP12049 #PapersForBeginningLearners
The abstract for the paper reads: The majority of experiments in plant biology use plants grown in some kind of container or pot. We conducted a meta-analysis on 65 studies that analysed the effect of pot size on growth and underlying variables. On average, a doubling of the pot size increased biomass production by 43%. Further analysis of pot size effects on the underlying components of growth suggests that reduced growth in smaller pots is caused mainly by a reduction in photosynthesis per unit leaf area, rather than by changes in leaf morphology or biomass allocation. The appropriate pot size will logically depend on the size of the plants growing in them. Based on various lines of evidence we suggest that an appropriate pot size is one in which the plant biomass does not exceed 1 g L–1. In current research practice ~65% of the experiments exceed that threshold. We suggest that researchers need to carefully consider the pot size in their experiments, as small pots may change experimental results and defy the purpose of the experiment.

... For now, the plot thickens; Flor’s classic ‘gene-for-gene’ hypothesis that has shaped our understanding of plant resistance to pathogens since 1940’s might be an oversimplification we may have to consider that differences in effector gene expression underly disease outcomes in the field.

Our yield trials are off to a good start. Some non-uniform emergence in some trials due to heavier residue in spots + dry conditions after planting. We all know variation in soil fertility is a key cause of error in trials, but I think variation in residue is another big one.
