going through my google photos to clear up space and realized I never posted a thing from Ryan North's How to Invent Everything that smacked me upside the head with some Golden Compass Feels. Lyra's mother's last name is the word for a cutting blade on a plow.

a cellphone photo from a paperback copy of Ryan North's How to Invent Everything, cropped to show a particular sentence. It reads: "The moldboard plow has a vertical cutting blade called a "coulter" (which can be made of wood but will work better and last longer if it's made from iron) that cuts down into the soil." The following sentence is cut short.

Our kids have been not doing so great on the complex and/or written response questions on bio exams, so we're making them do more writing in class. I'm grading last week's practice and got so frustrated at kids not fully answering that I'm putting stickers on the papers of those that are.

Our local superintendent is coming to observe my department + our 5th or 7th period classes next week, and I deeply suspect some of the materials one of the course team leads provided for the lesson was AI generated. I only noticed this as I was adapting it for my language learners.

Did the math, and I have a total of 95 students total on my rosters this year. Average out to about 19 kids per class, which is honestly pretty great. However, with the changes in our ESOL plan writing system this year, I have to answer a ~15 question survey for 73 of them. And it's due before Oct

I was so brave today and graded (and entered!) five whole classes worth of osmosis labs and city presentations and almost forgot to chop up a beet for tomorrow's SA:V demonstration BUT I REMEMBERED ON TIME also got all my pins on the new pin banner and picked out a dozen or so to give new homes to

mydialect.us/quiz-full.html Not sure why half of the quiz was made up of wildly weird uses of the word "anymore"-- is that a Midwest thing? Because my in-laws do it but they also have literally never once used a past participle so 🤷‍♀️

Map of the results from the MyDialect quiz showing that the speaker is likely from the Southern US.

"Cities most & least like you" results from the MyDialect quiz. Most similar: 1. Atlanta, GA 2. New Orleans, LA 3. Houston, TX. Least similar: 1. Minneapolis, MN 2. Boston, MA 3. Portland, ME
Answers that point most strongly to Alabama include 🛒 = buggy, rolling someone's house in toilet paper, and calling every carbonated drink "coke."

Trying to decide if I wear Hot Thrawn The war Crimer to DCon as planned or HTV the Jaina Solo stuff on the Rogue Squadron jersey (and sew down proper canvas later for games) instead. And then suddenly thought-- holy shit, Jedi Strike Team jerseys. Logo would obvs be a snarling voxyn. Brown, though?

The peril of gaining a certification to teach a core, graduation-required class on top of your specialty is that you're gonna get a whole lot of kids who need the core content but don't need anything that you're specialized for and friends this is my nightmare

our school has a "business and entrepreneurship" department that helps connect kids to opportunities so they can start thinking about employment after graduation etc etc etc but it's often abbreviated to B&E and every time I see it I have to work VERY hard to remember it's NOT Breaking & Entering

Well dang, should’ve just memed it in the first place

An illustration by Gustave Dore for Dante’s Divine Comedy that shows two silhouetted figures standing on a tall summit gazing up at a great celestial conflagration of souls in heaven. Text reads “We already had free art for people who are broke or bad at designing things. It’s called the PUBLIC DOMAIN”

Third time cutting the letters for the Rogue jersey-- thank goodness I bought a big chunk of wonder under and canvas because the first two times I cut the dang thing without mirroring first 🤦‍♀️ I went with the Thrashers font because why not

Canvas with an adhesive/paper backing being cut on a Cricut. The outline of the letters "SOLO" are visible, mirrored.

It's rare that I can read a scifi book and nitpick things but.... Ryland Grace is not a good teacher. He just... walks out. Of a class of middle schoolers. Doesn't contact a department head or course team lead or front office to grab him (emergency) sub coverage. Just leaves. That's... Bad.
