Was talking w some colleagues the other day and we came to the conclusion that, at this point, AI-generated Lean code adds almost zero to our confidence that the stated results are correct and correctly proved. (We already knew it added zero to our understanding.) #MathSky

I was taught first what is a field, in parallel* what is an abelian group, then what is a vector, then what is a linear map, and so on. It worked very well for me, but it's definitely not the best for everyone. *In a different course in the same days

Of course not, it takes time to define multilinear and alternating. NB definition of determinant: the only function on square matrices which is multilinear and alternating in the columns, and has value 1 on the identity.

How should the reader understand/interact with a paper in which neither the ideas nor the text were produced by a human? Because I don’t want to say that the author of the paper is simply the person who wrote a prompt and pasted the output somewhere. It feels intellectually dishonest.

Back when I was young, in Italy you could have gotten a job as researcher (ricercatore/ricercatrice). Tenure, a modest but dignitous income, a not heavy teaching duty (if you like teaching calculus you would have been beloved), small amounts of research money. I wish we still had it.

For those who don't know: Oberwolfach is a fantastic conference center in the Black Forest. The Scientific Committe, which I am not part of, selects who gets to use the facilities. The SAB comments on the director's work and gives advice. SAB currently is 3/4 women and very effective.

I am truly lucky. I am part of the Scientific Advisory Board and visit every year (for the duration of my appointment, which will soon be over) for a weekend. I get to interact with really smart people, and many of them are also wonderful humans.
