You're conflating "meticulous attention to detail" with "fidelity to source material." They likely mean Eggers is meticulous in his process (e.g. researching the period, writing, production design). Kubrick was meticulous; he also made significant changes in his adaptations.

Really not sure if this counts, but I got that BURN AFTER READING was the funhouse mirror version of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN like fifteen minutes in when I saw it opening weekend. Later I found out the Coen brothers wrote the projects concurrently, alternating days.
