I'm a fan of early exit too, only annoying that Lua doesn't support continue in loops, and I don't (usually) wanna use gotos just to mimick that... A can get super messy real quick, especially if nested, I've made that mess firsthand^^

Man, SDFs are black magic to me... Badass math fuckery. So this is at least twice as cool as you think it is :D

The best comments start with "Dear future me", because you know you'll appreciate it^^ Some that I have are bitching about my code elsewhere, causing the solution where the comment is to be the way it is... They're not the good kind of comment.

Testing the persistant world: If the players leave enemy range, they march towards the town. Rescued npcs will also go to town to help defend. Performance feels fantastic! Doing final tests and reuploading the demo. #gamedev #pixelart #solodev #indiedev #indiegame #godot #TheUniverseOfDeath

Fuck yesss! (also, persistent objects and mobs are much harder than I thought they would be, so kudos!)

May I offer an alternative entrance to gamedev, namely the modifying of game files by any means necessary? Finding a data folder with sprites in it and just messing with them in paint! (Little Fighter II and Obake, hell yeah!)

Playingt Monster Hunter 3U on the way back from rome, I decided to try and kill the lagiacrus that jumpscares you while doing a collection quest, only to have my love point out to me that you can't even kill it in that quest. At least got a tailcut out of it, fuck you Lagi -.-

I fondly remember Gothic's (1 & 2) forests, and that the LOD model for the forest looked kinda goofy. Being _inside_ them felt like you were in a dense and fairly lush forest. probably nostalgia tho. And AoE II's isometric forests still feel really good... Brb studying them for reference :D

One thing that's interesting about this is that it actually usually makes me close the app. I _want_ to watch on where I left off, even if it's just a 30 second reel, I might otherwise never find again. (because their search is shit too)

It is :) I may not be entirely intelligible because I've been on the train for close to a million hours^^ Random stuff and eastereggs are cool :)

I'll come crying to you once the gamedev police carries me away^^

Y'know you might end up with a reputation like the nethack devs (The Dev Team thinks of Everything)^^ Honestly, cool random shit may be my favourite thing about games - showing a friend the weird cheat, or hidden gamemode, that shit's fucking peak ;)

wait, we can reuse screenshots? :D (not that I'd do that, for that I'd need to make, some nice ones first)

be replaced by AI. And yet, if there's that many people who hate everything about it, maybe we can find our niche? Let's see what passions we can find, now that we're forced to look elsewhere :) (I've been in the AI-doom mode for too long now, forgive the optimism)

I feel you. I'm a webdev, which I still used to like a lot a while ago (not as much as gamedev, but that doesn't pay the bills). AI can do the fun part of my job better than I can. I still have my job, but it's probably on borrowed time. I've no idea what I should reskill to that won't eventually

I meant more like setting up people's computers in a company, helping with problems in a smaller place, but I'm afraid it might start creeping into aspects of it too... It's tough even finding fields it hasn't affected :/ Still hoping for at last a partial crash...

Bananicorn @bananicorn.com · 22/09/2026
Would you switch away from tech completely? I feel like I might just switch to internal IT support for a company at some point. I could help people with their issues and won't have to waste creative energy at my day job doing chores for AIs... Leaving more creative energy for my indie devving...

It's weird, I thought it was a germans vs italians thing, but maybe it has more to do with the age of the house...

Wtf, the poles do the light switches outside of bathrooms too??? I thought that was an italian thing... An absolute atrocity of a design decision -.-

Oh, and honestly Javascript isn't half as bad as people make it out to be :) (well that's coming from someone who enjoys Lua, but still)

seeing those it's a bit of a shame that most of my notes are digital^^ Also, phaser is a solid choice I'd say, I know someone who is making a Survivors-like in it, so it can probably handle most of what you want to throw at it :)

Bananicorn @bananicorn.com · 19/09/2026
Polish until you yourself can't believe you made that :D And yet, videogames are such a monumental heap of work, I'm amazed even crappy ones are ever finished^^

I thought they already buried that thing???

Bananicorn @bananicorn.com · 19/09/2026
Hell yeah! Imma follow along, this is bound to become really neat :) Btw, the thing you're describing is also something the devs noted on the first diablo - at one point a dev was playtesting for a bit and suddenly noticed it was something like 2 in the morning^^

Bananicorn @bananicorn.com · 18/09/2026
I mean you've got the basis for one hell of a cyber-style main menu there, it's not like you need to build a whole game around it :) Or shelf it for now and call upon it when needed, the day will come ;)

Please do keep testing, this looks cool! :D

Goodness gracious. He probably had an LLM write that scenario for him...

Had the day off today, fixed a handful of crashes and mucked around with enemy behaviour. Bit burned out in general, but I'm on a weeklong trip to Rome with my better half, so I'm hoping that'll recharge me a bit^^

No coding session for the second train ride - train's too full :( I can at least think about the problem, but I'm not sure my mental model of the code is 100% accurate at this point... Ah well, maybe inspiration strikes me in between all these tourists^^

Bananicorn @bananicorn.com · 17/09/2026
Another ride, another bit of (kinda) progress: I knew I was going to have duplicate entities with my approach, so I tried my hand at fixing it in this mornings session. I currently still have increasingly more (of the same) entities following me, so there's still some mistakes to iron out^^

Aw crap, good luck with that! I'm glad I'm employed and that the tax forms I need for that in italy are rather simple... I did mean to ask what the STUFF & THINGS you're making are, but I'm afraid I'll be getting annoying^^

Bananicorn @bananicorn.com · 17/09/2026
You mean like taxes and stuff? Eeeeeh I'd count it^^ Meant more creative work tho (although not too often, that ain't good) Also oooohhh mimosas with mango juice sounds amazing :D

Impressed, but surprised by which things come easier to me nowadays. (socially) Disappointed because the job I never thought I was smart enough for, and worked really hard to get into (programming), has basically been destroyed by AI. I might tell myself to do art instead, which is suffering too^^

Midori Sour is really really good :D What are you creating? :) (Also, what do you say to making stuff while drunk?)

Bananicorn @bananicorn.com · 16/09/2026
You're trapped in an endless cycle of making games, until one of your roguelites eventually makes it, but don't worry, at least your character gets better over time :)

Bananicorn @bananicorn.com · 16/09/2026
Today's train rides were productive: Entities that aggro the player, now spawn with a fixed delay at the level entrance the player came in. Now I still need to - make sure they're not lost to the void - they're not duplicated - base the delay on their distance to the player on level exit #indiedev

Addendum: I think its <4€ a month for 1tb, which isn't an enormous amount of storage, but easily enough for my needs^^

Bananicorn @bananicorn.com · 16/09/2026
I've currently got some FTP storage on Hetzner, but I'd need to set up rsync (currently I'm just syncing from my phone to it via FolderSync, but eventually the backups should be two-way...) So my dum dum answer is: FTP and rsync, there's probably a lot that still works with FTP nowadays :)

Maybe there's something you can do via Blender themes? I'd have to check _what_ can actually be changed, but i could imagine this might be a thing :)

Bananicorn @bananicorn.com · 15/09/2026
Well, at least I can tell you you're not alone in that^^ Looking at my dad, it'll be in my fourties when I can grow somewhat of a beard, saving lots of money on razors in the meantime ;)

Oh no, I could've read through the thread first, before saying something .-. Ah well, it is how it is^^
