The phallic symbols on Hermes statues were considered so holy and vital to public safety that damaging them was viewed as catastrophic bad luck. In 415 BCE, right before the Athenian military launched a massive naval expedition to Sicily, a group of vandals went through the city overnight and smashed the penises off almost all the hermai in Athens. This act of mass sacrilege caused nationwide panic, as the public believed the god Hermes had been stripped of his protective power, leaving the military expedition doomed.

Im rereading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell right now bc it's one of my FAVORITE books & wanted to add that the BBC adaptation is wonderful. Some of you just see him as Baelor Targaryen, but he'll always be Jonathan Strange to me.

I finally got around to reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell a few weeks ago, and that was a wonderful, bizarre novel that should be viewed as the ultimate modern literary expression of Very British Magic, instead of the comparatively bleak mediocrity of Harry Potter
